I read on interesting statistic a while ago with regard to US independance from the UK. With all the monies owed for weapons supplied to both sides during the American Civil War Britain owned more of America than it did whilst it was still "attached".

Well, there WAS a lot more territory to own a piece of during "the War of Northern Aggression" than when we were a colony...even split down the middle, both countries were bigger by that time...
