I research the major issues but I just run out of time and steam when it comes to the more obscure issues. I should be ashamed of that, I guess....but 5 pages of voting issues on this year's ballot just exhausted my efforts of preparation.
I also vote absentee, and that helps. Plus the State of CA puts together a voter's guide of the issues.
I do vote for women, when in doubt.

I always to my best to research the issues and the candidates but I've got to admit that I probably don't get as much info as I probably should. It has almost grown to the point where election day is a great day simply because it means the end of all those damn campain ads. It's just disgusting how the candidates sling crap all over each other....... but at least it's comforting to know that "they approved each message." One week they'll be talking about how their opponent supports child pornography and anti-semitism and then the next they'll show themselves playing with puppies and kissing babies. What's really sad though is that many people actually let those damn things decide their vote.

I wish I could have voted for these guys.
But more on-topic, I go for party line when in doubt, which I generally am not.

osuche,
Here in Baltimore, the Board of Elections sent out a 2006 General Election Sample Ballot a week and a half ago, so that helps a bit. The bond issues, referenda, and various amendments are all spelled out, although they are not explained.
We shall see if they have worked out all the kinks from the new, snazzy touch-screen voting machines!
See you at the polls!

so far i've voted with the levers, punch cards, touch screen, and now on paper that was scanned...
they are all flawed almost make voting more inconvenient than it is rewarding. and there were a few families with young kids... tantrums in a school gym echo a lot. i’m so glad my ears aren’t 100% yet
i didn't have to wing it for any this time, but i didn't even bother voting for a rep who had no opponent--write in or otherwise. and i did vote "against” twice
