The C&O Canal is a great hiking trail.

The Scout troup I mentor has done the C&O twice during my tenure, and my daughter cycled it with her Girl Scout Troop a few years ago.
Taking nothing away from those who prefer to enjoy it in other ways, the C&O is indeed a great hike.

http://www.nps.gov/choh/historyculture/places.htm The C&O canal was built in teh 1800's: "most" of the equipment is original, although I cna't tell offhand if that particular lock set is.
