A year-old article ... but good ...

Steak and Blow Job Day — oh, the romance. March 14: yet another day we can feel bad about not being shacked up with a significant other, or just feel the pressure of exaggerated expectations to please the one we do have.

Or is it?

Sure, Steak and BJ Day risks becoming just another day of disappointed promises, but maybe it’s time to subvert those pesky preconceptions about what any day designated to celebrating love should represent.

Steak and BJ Day may not sound as sweet as its Valentine’s counterpart — to some its connotations are downright misogynistic — but it is another day to show someone just how much you care.

Some even say this marks one of the few days that give long-standing couples an excuse to strip out of their daily routines and jump back under the covers.

But while Valentine’s leaves the illusion of a day filled with mysterious passion pleasures (romantic walks, starlit dinners, presents and candlelight, maybe), Steak and BJ Day is much more straightforward.

The directions are simple: eat, and orgasm.

But to assume that there lies the difference — that a complex and expensive day is designed for ladies, and a simple straightforward one is tailored to men — we lose sight of just how open Steak and BJ Day has the opportunity to be.

Just as not every lady craves the stereotypical hearty, flowery Valentine, not every guy is satisfied by a juicy steak and a blow job. No matter which day we look at, we’re dealing with stereotypes.

Whether you’re a male/male couple, a female/female couple, or a variation in between, it doesn’t change the fact that you’ve still got two partners who are ready to feel loved. And just because you don’t eat meat doesn’t mean both of you aren’t ready to get pampered.

Maybe, you really just want a nice cold beer with that blow job. Everyone deserves some lovin’, no matter what kind of gear they have in their pants. Instead of focusing on the binary roles associated with the day, look at it as an opportunity for two individuals to create time for each other and cater to a partner’s needs.

After all, the spirit of the day is to show appreciation for your loved one(s) in a simple way, void of consumerism and flowers. It’s to thank that person for making you happy, and to show you still care enough to do the same for them.

So take the day for what it is, lose the rules, and let it be another celebration of love — a day to show those closest in your heart just how much you care.
