I'll assume that one of the prizes for winning the contest would be some sort of scholarship........... the question is whether or not this young lady is in incredible need of more education or if a scholarship would simply be wasted on her.

At least they didn't ask her any tough questions like asking her to point out the U.S.

Didn't the silly girl know that the correct answer was, of course, world peace?

Worst public speaking experience ever
My speech killed! I was on my way to the provincials but then a judge asked me about affirmative action.
It completely discombobulated me. I had no idea what the phrase was and tried to bluster my way through an answer based on my speech on strident feminism (yes, I was pro). I flubbed it and lost the championship. That question made me lose! Augh!
That woman got nervous at a major event. It reminded me of my stage fright at a major event when I was a teen.
There's so much pressure on you when you're speaking in front of many people (and it's why so many people are more afraid of death than speaking in public).
She's still majorly hot and I hope she rises from this unseemly humiliation.

I liked her articulate 'A lot of people in the US don't have that' comment. Don't have what exactly?
And what would the ideal answer have been anyway?
Because Americans are stupid? That wouldn't have got her many points with the judges surely?
Because the education system is crap? That wouldn't have gone down too well either, I'd have thought.
I'm not sure how she could have got out of that one unscathed.
Perhaps she should simply have said 'I don't know, but it saddens me that the US people don't take more of an interest in the world as a whole and their part in it'
Why are people always so afraid of admitting that they don't know something?

How embarassing.
I tend to agree with Lou that there's no easy answer to put out there that wouldn't have offended someone, but there will always be opposing viewpoints that someone will have issue with. Say it like you see it and stand by your opinion.
I think she choked under the pressure, but she sure looked cute doing it. lol

Lou,
She was devastated that more Americans didn't have maps, cos if they had, then maybe South Africa could, or maybe the Iraq . . .
Steph,

We're petrified of doing something stupid and having everyone see it on the internet.
Pretty much like everything I do here.

I do not give much attention to most 'award' and pageant productions for being much more than self-indulgent exercises of marketing or the privileged, and that isolated clip did little to change my prospective.
If this 'competition' was to select the best example within a given parameter, I hope this young lady had gotten to this top level in error or through underhanded dealings. I didn't see any physical exception of attractiveness that couldn't be found by dozens in any high school across the nation. As for her "holding under pressure", nothing outstanding came across to me. I believe a trip to any grade school would have come up with a more coherent response.
If this sorting for a poster child of the 'typical' was the purpose, I'm more disappointed (and reinforced ) that she IS the winner. My concerns of our American isolated ethnocentric concept is not recent, but things ARE changing. The numbers alone have had me concerned for a long time. The ratio of 300 thousand to 6.5 BILLION and the difference of conditions and privilege on a more aware and shrinking planet have to tell us SOMETHING. Only recently have I not felt I was the only one marching to the beat of a different drum. Too bad the hardest taught are always the best lessons.

give her some credit though - I saw her on the Today Show yesterday and considering what she said at the Pageant, I give her full marks for going back on national tv
