September 4, 2006 - 3:35PM
Television personality and environmentalist Steve Irwin has died after being stung by a stingray while filming off north Queensland.
Known worldwide as the Crocodile Hunter, the 44-year-old was famous for his enthusiasm for wildlife and his catchcry "Crikey!''.
The Queensland Police Service issued a statement saying Mr Irwin collapsed after being stung at Batt Reef, Low Isles off Port Douglas about 11am. He had been filming a documentary.

He was unique. Sad that it may have been too much for his own good.

Gentlefolk,
He died doing what he loved. Not a bad ending for a naturalist.

It is sad. How many times I watched him and worried for him. But, like jseal said, he at least left this world doing what he loved best.
God bless you Steve Irwin and rest in peace.

my son is really really having a hard time with Steve's death.
I liked Irwin for the most part, and as I told my son, he died doing what he loved doing best. He died happy. He was a teacher as well, as he tought people all over how to care and like for animals that normally aren't liked.
I hope that I have a little bit of the excitement that he had for when I become a Biology teacher.

I think a lot of children will have a hard time with his death. He was an adventurous tv hero to many children who are stuck inside with nothing but cartoons and video games to be inspired by.

Yeah, I read the news this morning, was seriously wondering if it was a hoax. But couldn't find any indication that the story wa anythign but genuine.
Kind of sucks.

It is going to be a loss to the animal and environmental communities I am sure, but at the same time, how many of us will be able to say that we went out doing what we loved??
I'm fairly sure that I won't be in that catagory.
RIP Steve, and thanks for all the lessons.
