What should be done about the

Illegal immigrants.

Let us hear your thoughts. Let them become citizens, send them home or some other option. And this is just the people here illegally, not the legal immigrants.

What is the policy on immigration in some of the countries represented by members here?

Something the Oz Government learned well from the Brits.

As a by-the-by, a cousin of mine believes that in the absence of any overt criminality, illegals should be allowed to work, paying a taxation surcharge for the right to work in their country of choice. Their employers also pay a surcharge for employing foreigners. Put sufficient penalties in place (expulsion for the illegals and prison for the employers) if they don't play the game, and guaranteed minimum wages for the illegals, then why not????

I can now see why illegally immigrating to the US is so appealing to those that want to come here, now with the prospective of going through the long ardous task of trying to get Mayhem here and also from seeing it from the prospective of a good friend of mine whose husband illegally immigrated to the States. Her husband is now legal to work in the states but to get legal it took them 2 years and much money.

Going through the process i can truely say that the US gov't is biased against the poor, and most of the illegals are poor and trying to work in this capitalist soiciety. They still see the US as the land of opportunity. It can be, for the minority, but more than likely they will become day laborers, migrant farm workers and other jobs that citizens find unsavory. Right now, even though many workers are being paid "under the table" in cash, they are STILL paying taxes; sales tax on clothes, food, gas, tobacco, liquer and etc..

I say that making them felons is a bit assinine, as this will not discourage boarder crossings. When what you perceive as a fence that separates you from starvation and feeding your family, you will risk it. As in the case of my friend's husband, and the fine line that his family walked between starvation and eating.

The political arena is not my forte', but i know that there has to be a better idea than making illegal immigrants felons and wasting money on increasing boarder patrols and fences.

I know that one of the arguements for it is US jobs, that illegals are taking jobs away. I pose this question to those who say this---how many US companies, conglomerates, corporations, etc, have expanded across the US boarders and taken jobs away from the locals in those countries??

I do like what Oldfart had to say and feel that it is a more peaceable way to allow the immigrants to work.

We let everyone come in, as long as its not through the front door, we deport people to other countrys that have a legal right to be here just because they cant rember their name, we also deport people who have been here since the age of 2 to a country he had never been to because he stole things, but you try a get a nice lady from the US here on a working visa (dream) and sorry Mr Howard if you are watching

i would also like to say that i am in the IT industry and a lot of my colleges that i did my IT schooling with 20 years ago have dropped out of the IT industry because some bright spark in the goverment said there was a shortage of trained people in Oz in my industry so they allowed a mass migration of people from India into the country to fill the short fall and now as these people have all the IT jobs my colleges can not get work in this field and have moved on. now i am not racist or slinging of at the India people i'm just pointing out what country they are coming from

I believe the key word being lost in the debate is Illegal. That says it all.

The social activists would have us all believe that the American economy would come crashing down, if we put up a wall to actually identify where our border is, that life as we know it would end tomorrow.

Illegal is illegal. Isn't it funny how we only recongize and obey the current laws when they fit our agenda?

A few days ago at the dock here in Seattle a container was found with 22 Chinese people inside. They spent two weeks in it and paid about $10K US for the journey. What makes them illegal and those that are pouring over our Southern border not? Guess who is headed back to their home country while the others are allowed to protest?

Keep in mind who is behind this current push and why.

Canada just deported two dozen Portuguese immigrants because their work permits expired and the public is divided. They were working illegally but by all accounts were family people, etc.

Our Immigration Minister said:

"Obviously, it's a heart-wrenching thing for people to see their family and friends removed. We are compassionate. But we have to uphold the laws of the country."

Immigration is so complicated. We're sometimes not able to deport the "criminal element" and that outrages Canadians more. But like moose said, sometimes those illegal immigrants have been here since they were two and are then deported to a country they don't know.

I’m with Bare4You!

When there is a law that says you can’t do something or have to do it in a certain way, I think it is supposed to apply to everybody. It’s not like there isn’t a provision to do it the right way. Just make them follow the rules that were put in place to deal with issue. ……… Maybe they think they are president already.

……………. And don’t get me started with those protesters! People in America have not right to be protesting. They should be sent to the Gulag or Auschwitz or Guantanamo if they don’t like it.

Exactly! I can't understand feeling like you're entitled to what a country has to offer if you're not willing to be there legally.

Once again, I find myself unable to improve on the ideas of OF...the only downside I see to his suggestions is that they are WAY too practical & intelligent, & we all know what the state of govt. intelligence is in...

Yesterday ICE (formerly known as Customs and Immigration) busted a smuggling ring that were bringing in illegals from Canada. I ask the same question as before.....why are some who enter the country by less than legal means sent back from where they started their journey while others are now saying they are Americans even though they entered the country illegally???
