George Best, one of the more brilliant soccer stars of my youth, died yesterday. He, the Brazilian Pelé, and the Argentine Diego Maradonna, were extraordinarily fine players.

Alas, in their retirement, both Best and Maradonna, were consumed by substance abuse; Best by alcohol, Maradonna by cocaine. It seems that the mantle of stardom often becomes a shroud.

R.I.P. sir. You were one helluva soccer player!
