Wine
Sitting here enjoying a delightful glass of homemade red, I am wondering...
How well do you know your wines? What do you like? Dislike? Do you have any suggestions of what I should try?
I really don't know much about wine - apart from the fact that I like it

Sprite,
I loooooooove my wines.
Soft reds and lush, sweet whites, interspersed with pink champagne.
If you're in a really sweet mood, there is an almost sickly dessert wine range called 'boyrytis".
I recently tried a "vine cut" where the grapes are clipped on the vine and left to partially dry before being picked and processed.
Next on my list to try is an ice wine, where the grapes are allowed to freeze in the first flush of winter, then picked and processed.
Wines can be fun.

OOOOOOOOo... LOL I love white wine! (especially when it comes in a blue bottle)
I just watched a cooking show on PBS where the chef froze different juices in ice cube trays and then once frozen put the cubes in a wine glass and poured white wine in some and champagne in others. Sounded really good to me, and looked soooooooo pretty!

sounds yum! I am the only wine drinker in the house due to a medical condition Mr. Lil has. I found a place today that sells tiny bottles of GOOD wines. I can't wait to splurge and try a few.
Chey I know we both dig the blue stuff, so I thought I'd suggest this type that I like http://www.barefootwine.com/califor...ornia_wine.html
That is the wine we guzzle at bunco

Cool! Sauvignon Blanc sounds awesome! So does the White Zinfandel (a refreshing wine with tropical aromas of fresh pineapple and sweet citrus. Flavors of ripe strawberries and pears intensify the smooth, crisp finish.)
I could almost bathe in it..

I can't partake in any red wines due to migraines but I love a nice ice wine and it is made right down the road from me....lots of wineries around here.

I've been a fan of Lindeman's Bins for a long time. They're Aussie.
My boyfirend bought a Canadian wine the other night. As a chef, he's been on tours of the Niagara region & said the Cave Spring Riesling was really good & he was right.

Oldfart, ice wines are sooo good (at least the one I tasted ).
Cheyanne, I prefer red wines, but I love mixing drinks and that sounds absolutely beautiful!
Lilith, I am the only red wine drinker in the house, so I am always trying to find it in smaller bottles.
BIBI, when I was in Québec, I loved sampling all the local wines - I am sure Ontario has some good ones too!!!
Steph... You are dating a chef?!?!?! Why didn't I know this?!? You lucky lucky girl!!!
Alassë, send the bottles over here

He's awesome but I'll be twice your size by next year, I'm sure.
Has anyone heard that, on average, Canadians prefer dry wines & Americans prefer sweet?

The wine of choice is a dry red wine. Our Provincial Liquor Commission offers wine tasting classes. I also took a course called ‘Fun with Scotch’. They are a lot of fun and believe it or not, educational. I like many Australian Pinot Noir, South African Pinot Gris – both very similar grapes that have a full body taste. Ontario has some great Ice Wines.
I started writing down the names of the wines I enjoyed. Over time I discovered that I tended to like a certain grape. Wine is really all about, ‘Do you enjoy it’. Who cares what anyone else says.

Hmmm.... I am a personal fan of the Barbera grape....it's an Italian regional with a flavor all its own....likely closest to a cross between a Pinot Noir and a Sirah (nor Shiraz...which I find are lighter in general).
If you like heavy wines, try a Burgundy or a Zinfandel (Ravenswood Sonoma County is usually superior). I like Frog's Leap Cabernet too -- a big strong red.
I LOVE white bordeaux wines for whites...more complex than your average white, and dry with a fruity finish (as opposed to oak, which I cannot stand). I know several good French labels you can't get in the states so I won't bother to mention them here...but I could mention them in a PM if anyone were interested.
As for dessert wines....Ever had a Cherry Port? BlackStar Fams (US, Michigan area) makes the best I've ever had.
