I'm not sure that there is anything that pisses me off more than people who dump animals! I'm not sure if I'm just a sucker, but if a stray comes by work, he/she is guaranteed to get fed, loved and I attempt to find a home for them. Some of these animals are so pitiful I just cry...and trust me I have cried for days over the latest stray, who happens to be sleeping on my backporch at the moment. If they aren't going to take care of the animal, love them and give them a home until the day they die, then why the hell do they bother!! The dog on my backporch is a pitiful, sweet, loving Australian shepherd mix with the most amazing eyes you have ever seen, they are a swirl of light blue and brown and he loves to have his belly rubbed, what belly he has left from half starving!!!! The one in the picture is "Clyde" and he has a home, but comes to visit me at work cause he knows he will get loved!

I could go on and on and on, but I think you get the picture. If you aren't going to treat your pet as a member of your family, THEN DON'T GET A PET!!!

About 3 winters ago someone dumped 2 labs out by our place. We already had a golden retriever and a yellow lab and the 2 (1 yellow and 1 black) labs became fast friends with ours. I am such a softie, that we took these two in and tried to find their owner. Well, needless to say, we did locate the owner and he denied ever owning them! Apparantly, he had lived in the country and had these two dogs as partners for hunting. He had gotten married and moved into town and had a baby and the new wife didn't like the dogs so he took them out to the country and let them loose!!! I was sooooooooo angry!!!!

We had 4 really really big large humongous dogs eating and pooping.. (LOL) at our acreage and just couldn't take care of them all so we did find homes for the 2 strays. We had named the yellow one Arnold and the black one Ninja - they were the best dogs, but we just couldn't afford to feed them all. They now have a good home together, but it just made me angry that the previous owner didn't even bother to find them homes, but just dumped them in the country. We get a lot of that - at one time we had 21 cats!!!

People will argue with me on this... but as a non parent... I view pets as children... just as I believe people should really consider if they are ready to bear the responsibility of parenthood - I think similar attention should be given to owning a pet. You don't dump your kids in a field when they become a burden... you don't dump your kids on a street corner when they get sick... you wouldn't consider not feeding your child... you'd make sure your child got all the necessary healthcare...

Well that wasn’t much of a rant and not something many would have a different opinion about, so I guess it’s all right. :grin:

I think one of a dog’s (and cat’s) senses is identifying suckers. I operated an industrial plant for 13 years that was at the end of a dead-end street with little traffic over the weekends. It was not uncommon to find kittens or puppies that had been dumped, on Monday mornings. The one the was most memorable was the tire track that showed they had just gone to the end, turned around and opened the door to set the box of 5 puppies out into the snow. When my people came in, 3 were still alive and they became a project that did NOT boost production for the next month. LOL

My shipping department became an animal adoption center for strays and dumped pets on a regular basis. I had one guy that could convince any truck driver, his kids needs a puppy or kitty. LOL Of that special 3 pups, one was adopted, one became the plant mascot (sure as hell wasn’t a guard dog) and the last one became the best dog that ever lived for the next 16 years at my house.

I must point out, though, that some of your rant must be directed at the animal rights groups who advocate the outright banning of animal ownership, without regard one of the issues inherent: namely, without factoring in a grandfather clause (which is the case in more examples than not),it leads to the dumping of now-illegal-to-own animals.

My dog was abandoned, too. I picked up a cat from a gas station years ago & my parents still have her. My ex & I also took in a tiny kitten abandoned by his mother but he has him now.

It's a good point TT made about looking after an animal for life.

I have been thinking about getting a tortoise for my classroom but to be honest I can barely manage raising my kids for 20 years much less caring for a tortoise for 80. They are beautiful but I know better.

Well my mom and I both got in the way of a crazy neighbor with a crowbar who decided he didn't like my dog barking at him while he was teasing the dog......and I was only ten years old at the time. That kinda sums up how we have felt about our pets.

I remember my Dad came rushing out the back and had to grab the crowbar off my mom cause she would have killed the guy.

People who can't or won't be kind to animals are surely lacking in the skills needed to be parents. I listed my pets in a previous thread. Three had come from abusive homes but with good care and love they all became the best pets and were loyal and very protective of me. I'll take a dog anyday over some of the people I know.

There is a woman in my city here who had 6 horses and rented pasture for them. The owner of the land finally called the SPCA due to the fact that the owner had apparently abandoned them. They were very underweight and sickly so they were taken and cared for by the SPCA until they were well. The woman got charged with cruelty but was only fined and could retrieve her horses if she paid the 9000 dollar vet bill, which she did. It happened again and this time she was fined 10000 dollars and the horses were sold off to pay the vet bills. A local camp bought them to train for their program with autistic kids. My question is this. Why did she let this happen once and then a second time...there is no rhyme nor reason and she is now suing the region for not allowing her the proper amount of time she felt she should have been given to pay the vet bills. Some people are just plain loopy I guess.

She should have never been allowed to retrieve them the first time yet because animals are deemed property they fall under a different set of laws and that should change.

I want to get some terripins Lil....the main prohibiting factor for me is the cost..they're like AU$80 each *eek*

I have been looking at getting an English Mastiff....but am finding it difficult to find a registered breeder in my area...

I'm not in any hurry to expand my pets....cleaning up after my ferals and full time work is snowing me under let alone the training and care of a puppy (a bloody large puppy *LOL*)

The problem is with a lot of dumped pets is the owners never really thought it through...puppies & kittens are cute but they grow and the novelty wears off

Desexing and taking unwanted pets to a pound would stop a lot of the unneccesary animal cruelty

In my time, I've seen some horrible things happen to unwanted animals. Came upon some drownings, shootings, abandonments...etc...and TRIED with every fiber of my being to make sense of it or make it right!

Never made sense of the deaths...I just had to cope!

My cat is a "desperate soul". We adopted him as a sickly kitten and I raised him thinking he'd never grow old. He was pretty bad off. He's now 17(ish) and never cost me a penny till recently. I am so in love with my cat that you guys have a lot to deal with when I lose him!!!!!!

I've had some stray cats living with me before I moved to the Fl. Keys. I lived on the property of a vast farm, and so stray cats weren't unheard of. I met Katie first. She was a calico and loved to weave between my legs as I stepped onto the porch to feed her. I named her Katie from a song my mother used to sing to me..."K K Katie, beautiful lady...you mm mm make me, c c crazy. When the mm mm moon shines...over mountain...I'll be wating at the kk kk kitchen door"!

Next came Rueben. He was a black cat that had never been touched by a human. I held a brush out and talked to him in a voice only a cat would love. Took me 5 weeks to get him close enough to rub the brush. The moment he rubbed against the outstretched brush...I knew I had him, heart and soul! He LOVED the sensation of the bristles. Every morning, after that, I would just sit on the step and call his "name" and there he'd be, and I was his slave...lol!

My heart BLEEDS for unwanted/discarded animals! I've missed my calling and I know if I got into the biz of saving them...I'd have more animals than Carter's got liver pills! Rocky (my 17ish y/o cat) wouldn't let me have another animal in this house no matter how hard I tried!

Soon as he is gone...all hell is gonna break loose! Mr. Lixy doesn't agree...but he married me and he's STUCK! *WEG*

The number of times I have had to throw stuff to get these frigging things away from my SO's ground-parrot (black-faced love bird).

People should be responsible for all the actions of their pets.
