Flying Q&A

Hey friends,

I'm heading out tomorrow on a trip to CA (purely business, unfortunately) and have some questions about waht is and is not permissable to take on an airplane. Specifically, I do lots of crosstitch and was wanting to take it on the plane with me, but I'm not sure the needles will be permissable.

also, the last time I was on a plane I threw up everywhere. I'd like to try and avoid that this time - it's impossible to do that gracefully. Can anybody give me some tips keep from getting sick?

help me out!

your scissors to cut your thread are not allowed, no matter how small, neither are nail clippers. needles--that i am not sure of(at least that was what i was told)

and then for the motion sickness, dramamine is the best. what i did was took a dose of it 30min before take off so it have a chance to work. then i made sure that the cold air vent was pointed at my face so it felt like i was breathing fresh air. and you can either look out the window, or shut it providing that you have a window seat. if not, close your eyes and concentrate on breathing the cool air. otherwise, makesure that you have a barf bag near

hope that helps and good luck on your flight, keep us posted on how things go!

I crochet at home because I can't sit still. It's meditation. But you can't haul an afghan on a plane, so I do cross stitch when I fly. The needle's are fine, at least mine were as of last May. I just got really good at biting off string with my teeth .

Liz has great suggestions for the sickness. Also, were you sick at the beginning of the flight or nearer the end? If the end, dehydration may have been part of it...keeping water handy throughout might help you from getting the queezies. If at the beginning, well, then you probably won't want anything on your tummy.

Worst flight I ever had was a transatlantic one where a flu bug kicked in about an hour and a half before boarding. Someone was looking out for me, I had an aisle seat a row from the toilet. Spent most of the flight in there either being sick or feeling sorry for myself. You might keep that in mind when choosing your seat. If you can't be graceful about it, at least you can be private .

Good luck!!

G

I don't get sick! I can't! Who will hold the plane up if I let go of the arm-rests? :dizzy:

LOL Lilith!!

Lonelyarmywife, I hate to mention this but it MIGHT be the needlework that's making you sick when you fly. Sometimes reading or doing other things close to your face makes the inner ear go bonkers......and you end up queasy or downright barfy.

Wait, I may have read it wrong.....do you get sick EVERY time you fly? LOL If not, nevermind.

As far as throwing up gracefully.....tough to do isn't it? And the noise, OHhhhhh I make SUCH horrible noises when I toss my cookies! It's scary!!! Obviously I've got no tips for ya on that one. :dizzy:

OH WAIT, yes I do have a hint. Ziplock bags, the ones with the neato zipper thingie? I bring a cool wet washcloth in one and use the baggie for uh....sickness, if/when needed. Those little teensy paper barf bags would miss the target, so to speak. *look of horror on my face*

i think knitting needles are allowed if they're plastic. give the security office at the airport a call, i bet they have a list.

and have a safe flight!

Sorry I didn't see this any earlier, I could have answered the question (I do this for a living after all). Anytime you have a question about what you can and cannot take on a plane from now on - just ask me and I'll let you know. Sorry for being so slow on the response.

hey dudes, i'm back on the east coast. for what's it's worth, the needles made it through security, the sewing scissors did not, but I'm not suprised about that. As far as motion sickness goes, i took some dramamine and drank lots of water like you guys suggested and i did ok. I was kind of queasy the first leg, but after that it levelled out. A big thanks to everybody that helped out!
