You're Fired!

I had to fire someone yesterday at work. He had it coming...continued non-performance after much counseling and several warnings. Still, I hate having to do such things because I know it affects his family and others who know him. Yeah, I know he put me in a bad position and the blame is ultimately his but I still felt like shit afterwards.

Has anyone out there ever had to fire someone? How did you go about it and how did you feel afterwards?

I've had to fire a few people. By far it's the worst when you lay someone off -- not because of their job performance, but because of company financials. I guess for me it depends on the situation. I try to make sure that getting fired is never a surprise to a person....repeated warnings, discussions, etc. That way you can diffuse some of the anger. And -- if I think it was more circumstance than the character of the individual -- I give the person some headhunter names and offer to be a reference.

No matter what, it always really sucks though. (((Rabbit)))

Look at it this way ~ don't try to be good at it ~ and hope you never have to get really good at it!

yes I have when I worked at the vet hospital. they got 3 warnings then they were gone. If you can't depend on em they don't need to be there. It shows they don't like their job and eventually they would leave anyways. So you did you both a favor.

I haven't directly fired someone but do review the work of co-workers & have to report glaring errors that can cause them to be canned.

I've also seen a lot of people come and go at my current company and they've all been given repeated warnings they chose not to heed.

A few people in particular constantly blame management for their issues when it's clear the fault was the worker's (laziness and carelessness mostly).

rabbit...you scared me! I thought oh shit he's told his boss off again

LOL I have avoided firing people by getting them a new job before and one I made quit. I've never had to fire someone who did not deserve it.

You're right...he just didn't give a shit and I probably did him a favor. Funny thing was that I thought the guy was gonna break down when I told him...he was worried about what he would tell his wife. Go figure...

Yes...he always had an excuse for why he didn't or couldn't get the job done.

I tried to help him but he just didn't want to be helped.

I have been in your position before as well Mr Wabbit.

One was an instant dismissal where the guy punched another employee and I witnessed the whole thing so it was a bully getting his comeuppance. The worst concerned a young guy who was a tryer but just couldn't do the job properly. He was trained and retrained and his collegues helped but in the end he was not doing what he was hired to do and couldn't be carried. I knew he had done his best but the job was beyond his capabilities.

We had had several meetings about the problems he had with his duties before and i had asked him what he needed to help him and he had done more training but he made a silly mistake right afterwards that cost a lot of money through lost production.

I tried to be compassionate when delivering the news and it was a hard task as he was a nice person who gave his best wich just wasn't good enough.

One good thing was that the company employed a job seeking agency and through that he found a job suited to him and I recently met him and he has just been recognised for 10 years service and is happy in his job. Working with people and not machinery is his forte. (He works with the YMCA these days)

It sucks being a boss at times.

I've never been in a position to fire people, but sometimes I wish I was. I'm the type of employee who shows up 15 mins early everyday and works hard all day. I don't knock off early for breaks and will sometimes work through a break to get a job done. I take pride in whatever job I'm doing, thus I do it well. I get tired of other employees messing around talking and the what not when they are supposed to be working. They leave their work for other people to do, which usually ends up being me. I hate not being able to properly deal with people like that.

And you are the employee that managers dream of Nice Guy. Being new to management, and person much like you, I have learned quickly that obviously not all people have the same thoughts on working.

Like Steph...I give job performance evaluations and have had the burden of being responsible for someone getting canned. But they were warned and I requested that if they have trouble with something to NOT pretend they can do it and mess it up...just ask me and I'll help! They didn't heed my word or warnings...and so they are no longer with us. Lucky bastards! I wish someone would give me the boot so I can figure out (have more time to ponder) what I want to be when I grow up!
