Good Deeds

Today I had a good deed done for me .... for several months (yes I'm a bit of a procrastinator) I've had a bit of a problem with the hood of my car (bonnet for those in the UK) where it pops up a couple of inches while I'll be driving down the road ... don't worry, there is a MAJOR safety latch that has kept it safe, but all the same, it pops up about every 10 miles or so, so I haven't felt like driving anywhere for the last couple of months (except to work and home). Anyway, I finally got around to calling and making an appointment to have it fixed ... it took all of about 10 minutes ... and when I went to pay the guy he told me it was his good deed for the day and wouldn't let me pay him.

So this is my way of saying thank you ... to him and to others who do good deeds for those in need. Do you have a story to share about a good deed done for you ... or by you .... or maybe for or by someone you know. I love to hear good things about people .... I'm a big believer that there are good people everywhere!!!

Thanks for letting me share ... and please share any stories you want as well. Fzzy.

absolutely, I'm a very big believer in doing something nice for others as often as possible. Good Karma ... or the "law of the harvest" .... whatever you want to call it, I believe that when you do good for others, good often gets done to you as well. Sounds like you have a similar outlook.

I agree....and do it when it is least expected. I try and tip more to a waiter or waitress who has been given a hard time by other people.

I call it

"Don't rob me of my blessings."

I feel that if I can do something nice for someone, especially if they don't know how to do it, I have been blessed with the intelligence or "know how" to help them. When they offer to pay me or feel as if they are indebted to me.. that is what I tell them.

Another family tradition..."pass it on." If someone really feels that a that a favor needs rewarding or payback, we tell 'em to go ahead...but to pass the favor on to someone else as our reward. We don't actually think that's where the idea for "pay if forward" came from, but we're not ruling it out.

Another car good deed. We used to have a mini-motor home and had been down in Texas visiting a sister and brother-in-law. We (my wife and I and all seven kids) were on our way home and had just reached Joplin, Missouri when the van really bogged down. We weren't doing more than about 30 on the interstate, so pulled over at a gas station by the first exit. The guy there, after looking at everything, started reading off a long list of repairs that would be needed. Several hundred dollars worth. Thanked him, but said I thought we'd check some more before having the work done.

About a mile up the road was this greasy, dirty, concrete block garage. I pulled in and mentioned we were on our way home from vacation and told him about the problem. The man (pretty dirty and greasy himself) said, "Just a minute." Went inside, got something, raised the hood and in just a few minutes said, "That oughta' do ya."

I asked what the problem was, and he said, "Heck just a little filter. T'wernt nuttin."

I asked how much I owed him, and he said, "Nothing. Yer' on yer' way home and didn't need the hassle of havin' to stop, anyway."

I gave him $10 dollars and said to at least have a round of beers on us. The van ran beautifully after that.

Gentlefolk,

I’m sure that all, or at least most, of us have been surprised and delighted by these “random acts of kindness”. I find it intriguing how often kindness pops up unannounced.

It is always nice to be reminded how often people are decent to each other.

My life has been a series of these moments, both giving and receiving. It's why I still have faith in people.

I've always tried to do good deeds for people as much as possible, and I've learned that it's always the little, unexpected things that people like the most. One that I've learned from my father over the years... on the highway near my house there's a set of toll bridges, and the toll is only $0.50. So every so often, we just pay for whoever happens to be behind us. It's just a nice little gesture, and people are always shocked. It's always nice to have people do it for you as well. The little things.

You HOPE you are paying for the car behind you.

Either way, you've made SOMEBODIES day better. The people in the car behind you or the bridge tender. lol

Ready4Ty,

It is interesting you should do that. About a year ago (maybe two), I received an email from someone I used to work with asking me if I had paid her tunnel ticket the day before.

I responded with a “Huh?” She replied to that by explaining that when she tried to pay the toll, the tollbooth operator had said, no, the car ahead of her had paid the fee. As the car ahead of her had been a red 4-door and there was only a male driver, she thought it might have been me.

I had to say no, it had not, but thanks for the thought, etc. etc.

One nice thing that did come about because of this (mistaken) generosity is that we resumed email correspondence. Serendipitous that.

Oh that's sweet. But jseal, don't you kind of wonder if she just wanted to start up the correspondence again and came up with a brilliant excuse ? (kidding...really...mostly)
