nikki1979~ may I recommend checking the belt, that is what usually causes a vacum to smoke and get that burnt rubber smell. It is usually quite easy to replace just requires a new belt and a screwdriver. Btw...if you take the cover off where your beater brush is you will see a broken piece of rubber(if it is infact a broken belt)

When we first got our Kirby, we sat it down and had a long, serious talk with it about the dangers of smoking. And I'm proud to say that it never even considered starting.
But then again, when we're not around, we keep it locked up in a closet.

I've had mine smoke twice. The first time it was the belt, and the second time it was too but it wasn't completely broke. I couldn't see where it was worn thin so I kept looking at it, putting it back together and trying it again. My husband was so sick from the smell. Finaly I just replaced it anyway and sure enough it worked fine! Lol

I had that happen with a vacuum a few years back- it was the motor going caput. That was a hoover, lasted 4 years. Then we got a new one that I liked for all of 2 weeks- it kept getting clogged on nothing, and then wouldn't work. THEN we bought one of the bagless cyclone dealies- B.E.A.Utiful! I love it. Very nice indeed, and well worth the money. Heck, we didn't even get a high end one, we just got one that I found on sale for about $120, and I swear, it was sucking dust out of the carpet that had likely been there since the place was built. Vacuuming a clean rug came up with loads of dust. I love this vacuum.

I wonder what the surgeon general has to say about the second hand smoke from a vacuum...should we be warning small children in fine print on the bags or something????
