Question
I have a serious question.I'm not trying to be a "wiseass",it is a
question, that my wife & I have often wondered about. When I worked at Sikorsky Aircraft,I was in the Teamsters.(Flight Hanger
Steward)Most of my other workers, political alliances, varied greatly!Does anyone know how a union endorces a candidate?
A member,pays dues,& I would think that some,would be,very,
indignant! This isn't to start a political arguement.I just don't know how they decide! Irish

Hey Irish,
I'm also in the teansters as has my whole family been for 3 generations. The general executive board gets together and "supposedly" reviews all the candidates and thier stances on issues that effect the labor movement . Again they are supposed to choose the candidate that would be best for and friendliest to organized labor. Personally, I still vote my own mind,as I'm sure most brothers and sisters do, but you do have to wonder about some of thier choices.

tony44---Thank You.It was long ago & may have changed,but when I worked at Sikorsky(1965-1971,approx)it wasn't a union
shop.Union membership was not-compulsory.At the time,the local,
was so crooked,that you wouldn't believe it.As I said,the members
political afiliation, varied so much, that I wondered how the union,
supported one person.The smartest thing that I ever did,was when,I left Sikorsky,to move to NH,I went to the union headquarters,& got a withdrawel card.It,basically says,that I am a member in good standing,the reason for withdrawing,was because,I was moving.That way if I join a local here,I show them,
the card,& don't have to pay an initiation fee.The card cost me
approx.$.50/$1.00.Alot of people don't know,that such a thing exists.Things may have changed.At the time,Sikorsky was a member,of United Aircraft.It is United Technologies now. Irish

Irish,
I believe that tony44, is correct. Unions recognized by the NLRB must operate within a set of regulations, and the endorsement by a union of a political candidate is supposed to be for the benefit of the union's membership.
