Post On the menu..........

I don't really know why I do it. I stress out the night before making all the pies, homemade rolls, salads and such.

At midnight, the 22 pound turkey goes in the oven to cook slowly overnight. at 250 degrees.

When I get up in the morning, the house is filled with a wonderful smell... I take out the turkey around 10:00, sneak some of the broth from the pan, and place foil and a dishcloth over the top.

I chase everyone out of the kitchen to their protests of "I am staaaaaaaarrrrrrrrrvvvvvvvvvving!"

I then proceed to bake the candied sweet potatoes, greenbean cassarole, and peel the white potatoes and start them to boil. I take the real butter out of the fridge so it will get soft. Next is the creamed pearl onions and the gravy made from the broth of the turkey.

I chase everyone out of the kitchen........

The table is set and made ready. The relatives appear lots of hugs and how are ya's.

At 1:00 the turkey is carved - always very moist and succelent.

The bounty is placed on the table and everyone takes their seat.

"We are thankful for........." "MOM!! I am hungry!!!" Pass the turkey!" "Can I have a roll please?" Then silence as everyone takes a bite of their favorite dish...

30 mintues later... everyone sits back, grandpa loosens his belt and eyes the pie that was made especially for him..... we all smile....and groan, sit and talk for a bit... and then they all make their way out into the living room.

I am alone. This time I didn't have to chase anyone out of the kitchen.

Then............. replaying the conversations, the teasing, the stories of growing up that occured during the meal in my head I realize why I do it.

I smile to myself as Cobalt comes up behind me and hugs me... plays with my butt, nuzzles my neck, and tells me he loves me and then picks up a dish cloth and tells me to sit down - he will clean up the mess.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Cobalt has gotten very good at cutting pieces in slivers so everyone can have a little of each..

Yes GG. This is one of the things American got right. As I’ve said, this is by far my favorite holiday gathering, and more so at this point in my life. What Chey just described to you is something that I’ve partaken in from the many prospectives life gradually gives us. From the days of eating all the special parts of the feast at the “kids table” to now being the grandpa. ……….

The events of Thanksgiving Day are not punctuated with the commercialisms of Christmas morning, but accumulate as a personal security and warmth maybe more meaningful, as the chapters are added. The only competition this day is on a football field outside of your family. The all-day background of activity and smells is an event most will only need two digits to recall from all the days of our lives.

And it is the Grandmas and Moms (----^, ----^ ) and now daughters that make it materialize from a gathering of dinners to a Norman Rockwell memory.
As social climates and cultures change, there are only a few things that can not be improved on. Cheyann just told you about one.

Thank you woman of our families. You ARE the center.

And the Grandpa role is the best.
You get to play with the grandchildren, eat and watch football and know one says a word.

I am glad that atleast ONE holiday hasn't been ruined by the almighty dollar.... yeah.. it is expensive to put it all together... but when it all comes down to it... it comes down to what is really important... family... and friends..... those you love...

Thanks Cheyanne for your description of how it is at your home... I could almost imagine myself there... just as long as Cobalt gives me a BIG piece..... of Pecan pie that is

Happy Thanksgiving... I am blessed to have such wonderful friends here at Pixies.. and I am thankful.. HUGS all around.

Steph,

Well, one of my nieces locked herself in the upstairs bathroom, and I had to take the handle off the door to get her out. I don't know how she did it - the lock worked earlier in the day, and works well now.

Just one of those things that seem to happen when the family gets together. At least it wasn't a burn or a cut.
