Electronics (TV, Radio, Computer et al..) vs. Real People in Real TIme

Alright! Do you prefer to watch the TV, listen to the radio or be on the computer as opposed to spending quality time with family and friends? If so, which ones and why? How much time? (I've a curious personal interest in this thread.)

My friends online are real to me. Some of them are as important to me as the family and friends I can get my hands on. I have trouble with people who act like talking with people online is equivalent to watching TV. Deeper, more honest, communication often goes on between people online than with the people you talk to face to face.

Sitting at a cafe, having coffee with a girlfriend is no different to me than when I am sitting in my jammies sipping coffee in the morning and chatting with a friend online. I think to compare chatting with people online to a passive activity that requires no interaction, like tv is to devalue the people online that you interact with.

I understand. No need for a soapbox. My inquiry was, perhaps, worded improperly. I, too, would not part with my friends, online. They are very real to me, too. My curiosity stems from this being such an electronics age. Apologies extended if offense has been committed. A friend and myself were discussing writing vs. typing and then typing vs. computers, and it just wound up from there.

Actually Mae I did not mean to come off as an uber bitch about it. Guess it just comes naturallySorry! I just know people who do not see the intensity of online relationships as being equal to those in what they call "real life".

My situation is much like Teddy described, I spend time doing things with the people around me and the people not so close around me everyday. Some days more of one then the other, and some days the other way

*sits down and waits for Aqua

Oh and I listen to the radio almost 24/7 but rarely watch TV. I might average 2 hours a week tops. I think you may find a lot of people here also spend a good deal of time devouring books!

I see all the devises listed as communication tools between real people and they are changing all the time. The instant, two-way abilities have greatly changed the nature of these tools to a personal interaction capability much like the telephone changed the telegraph. Many of the one-way TV programs are quickly adapting to begging for instant interaction feedback e-mail now. (Even though their motives may be for rating reasons) I don’t see it as Electronics vs. Real People in Real Time, but real people in real time USING electronics.

As for the intimacy of face-to-face, I don’t feel one is in competition or replacing the other, but is allowing use to get beyond ourselves and our small circles of acquaintances. It also lets me spend “quality time” with my family and friends that I couldn’t because of the same changes in transportation and distances they may be at. This can’t replace having somebody I care about next to me, but I can care about people I’ve not had next to me. I have to agree with Lilith (damn ) that they are as real as many “friends” and I can share things with them I can’t in the REAL world. How would I have gotten to met Steph without this?

Please disregard all statements above!

Maybe this qualifies me as an uber geek, but some of my recent better friends have been from some mmorpgs---ie Asheron's Call or Star Wars Galaxies.

People sharing a common interest, wether over coffee, phone, or internet, friends are friends...

Jim

although, friends sharing a drink at the bar don't correct my spelling....

I enjoy radio, too. When I worked for Public Radio, the programs were interesting and fun. Now, I listen to light jazz and R & R. VERY generalized question...What do you think of Public Radio? Do you like the programming on your local station? Lilith's comment about radio 24/7 makes me curious.

I'm one of those people that devours books. I watch 4 - 5 hours of tv a week, and play the x-box for an hour a week or so. There's this damn off-road racing game that I'm hooked on. ha ha

My online friends know just as much, if not more, about me as the friends I see face to face. My online friends have never seen my children, and the friends I meet with have never seen my penis. ha ha

It's not better or worse, just a different way to communicate with people you care about.

Ask IAKG, though I don't know if she's impartial. ha ha

Do radios still receive other signals?

*stumbles on Lilith’s broken ass as he scrambles for the OF & I soap box.*

Cleveland didn't get NPR until the early 80's but there hasn't been another station set or tuned to since. From Klick & Klack to Science Friday, I have no other air vibrations polluting my ear drums. [Except my 3 hours of TV (another thread) per week] I was so pleased to hear of their recent windfall. After being a subscriber for two decades, it was a pain to listen to the week of begging every few months. It even gives us Americans a way to keep an eye on those Knucks with As It Happens from CBC. lol

I already liked you Mae. But now I KNOW we are going to get along well. Slide that skirt up and bend over.:lust:
