I guess as a sheer fact, it can't be disputed. In late 2001 in OKC, all the plaques were taken down from the site of the former Murrah building that declared it the site of the worst terrorist attack within the US, to be replaced with signs declaring it the site of the SECOND worst terrorist attack within the US. City officials were VERY upset (because of the loss of life) at having to make that revision. I'm not sure I'd want to claim it as a 'record' - not in the competitive sense anyway.

As far as sick as in gross, I've always found the human body world records to cause a person to shudder.

I can understand it as a world record beacuse I am sure it is...but they really should disable the link for "break this record" on the page....Kinda a disrespect in my eyes otherwise..

It's not a record I'd want posted anywhere. On a building or in a book.

There are more appropriate ways to remember. I think with the respectful and thoughtful manner in which the Oklahoma memorial was designed and built, someone in charge would've nixed the sign.

As far as I know, the sign in OKC only says something like "On this site stood the Alfred P Murrah Federal Building, site of the second worst terrorism attack on US soil."
I've not been to OKC in quite some time (despite being born there).

2 years ago, when the signs came down, they said something like (and i'm paraphrasing here, it's been 2 years)
"We hoped we would never have to change these signs, and especially not in our lifetimes."

I'm sure it was handled with dignity and respect, but the fact that it was there in the first place raised the issue of "well, what now?".

This is a very sick record in my opinion, and God willing, it will not be broken. The real problem it seems now, is, the problem still exists, therefore, it has just become a challenge !! ( I thought long about this, and much more could be said on a cruder note, but for decency sake, I will not be more blunt).

I think its very distasteful. I may not know enough about world records but I always regarded them as some form of an achievment of some kind, even the odd ones.

That my friends, was no achievement. Still get goosebumps from it, even now as I type this. If we are lucky, they will take this record and any others like it, out of the book.

Wow. I thought it was going to be some gross body test record - I saw a guy on the Jimmy Kimmel show a few weeks ago who beat the most stomach crunches record (that man didn't look well after doing several thousand crunches, let me tell you).

I can't believe Guinness would have something like this on their site. I can understand it's in the historical/war type section but I still don't agree with those types of "records" being there. What if some sick bastard tries to beat it?

I don't think anyone's going to try to beat it for the sake of being the record holder. There's other records in there regarding mass murder, etc, and I'm not aware that their status as records have ever been a factor in anyone else's actions. Whether or not Guinnness publish it or not it's still going to be a known fact and a known world record, so I don't see the point in them not publishing it.

Just my opinion.....but they should really disable that link! They might as well be calling all nut cases!

I can see what you're saying, Belial, but there are a lot of sickos out there who commit crimes for the publicity, especially serial killers.

I prefer the world records for the largest pie, the longest fingernails, etc.

I too am upset by it. But I think that's a good thing. It keeps it fresh in my mind, and as horrible as it was, I never want it to fade from my memory. I want to remember the vivid details of that day so as to honor those that fell, to immortalize all those that gave everything to save another. I'd prefer that the information be out there as much as possible, so that others can remember too. So they can tell their children and grandchildren about it. So the terrible truth doesn't get whitewashed by time. I don't think terrorists need a few lines in Guiness' record book to derive inspiration, their hate lies outside of the trivial. Believe me, they were dreaming of something bigger the minute the towers fell. That's precisely why we can't forget.

The shame is, the terrorists are still dreaming of something bigger ...

God forbid they ever succeed.
