Opinion on Love

Well, since the revamp of the signature policy, a few people have asked me about my old one. (It was too long and had to be removed.) It was actually part of a conversation between two characters in a comic book. Since some of you seemed interested in it, here it is in it's original form. And before anyone asks, yes, currently that IS my view on the subject.

ROSE: Have you ever been in love?
DESIRE: You might say that.

ROSE: Horrible, isn't it?

DESIRE: In what way?

ROSE: It makes you so vulnerable. It opens your chest and it opens your heart and it means someone can get inside you and mess you up. You build up all these defenses. You build up this whole armor, for years, so nothing can hurt you, then one stupid person, no different from any other stupid person, wanders into your stupid life...

You give them a piece of you. They don't ask for it. They do something dumb one day like kiss you, or smile at you, and then your life isn't your own anymore.

Love takes hostages. It gets inside you. It eats you out and leaves you crying in the darkness, so a simple phrase like "Maybe we should just be friends" or "How very perceptive" turns into a glass splinter working its way to your heart.

DESIRE: How picturesque.

ROSE: It hurts. Not just in the imagination. Not just in the mind. It's a soul-hurt, a body-hurt, a real gets-inside-you-and-rips-you-apart pain. Nothing should be able to do that.

Especially not love.

I hate love.

Very powerful words that can be used not only to describe love, but also alot of other of lifes unfair situations.

I have decided it's over-rated.

What? Love or The Sandman?

I've thought for periods of time that is too. I'm quite subscribed to it right now though.

ps - Say, Eros, would you like a chocolate covered pretzel? I think jay and silent Bob are great. Clerks was an auteur defining piece. Fabulous stuff. I have all five films on tape. I wish I could find some comic book issues of them.

Love...I gave it up for Lent!

If you get the glass splinters at least you remain whole. It's the people who peck at your heart like the bird in the myth (like the REM video) that do the worst damage. Funny though, when you love them, you gladly sacrifice each piece even relish their return for another bite.

Been listening to love songs too much lately!

I'd say some more about Gaiman, but I'm afraid I'd get way off topic REAL fast.

Does expertise in unrequited love count for anything?

Wow. Seems pretty deep for a comic, doesn't it?

Dicksbro, shame.

Graphic novels may seem like kid's stuff (some even are)

but a lot of good stuff ends up there.

Lil, not currently a fan of Love?

Yeah, what OF said. LOL I've followed comics off and on since I got out of High School that's been 10 years. They're definitely PG-13 now. The Sandman series (from where the quote came) was written for "mature readers".
