The Australian Government
Now that I have your attention I thought I would let you all know what the australian government has decided to do in regards to policing web service.
Our main internet provider is telstra who started off as telecom, before they got their hands on internet they were just a phone company....still are.
Their division of ISP is called bigpond. ( www.bigpond.com) Now our idiots over in Canberra have decided to invade our privacy of our own internet access by having monitoring systems in place. Basically as soon as you look at a porn site it blocks you. They haven't put it in place as yet as there will be plenty of protest against it. I believe the main reason for this "dragnet" of sorts is due to the high level of child porn wankers that we have here.
The most recent being some police officers who are meant to be protecting people from these sort of monsters, and also we have had quite a few priests hiding in the "closet" as well who have also been caught.
The worst thing is, the software that they are going to use does not distinguish between porn, "naked art" and I dare say even this site, with it's moderate level of adult material. But I think this site will be safe for us aussies as it is foremost a forum so the only way to look up the adult stuff is to be a member. Oh the perks of membership....gotta love it.
The only way they could use this software is have it within the ISP main server.
Now if the house of reps decide to pass the bill, then the aussie network of net users will drop quite quickly. The other issue of course is doctor's and those in the medical field who need to use naked pictures for reference etc would also be denied access for their med exams and the like.
The coming months will interesting to say the least.

They'll probably have to watch each site,to distinguish if it is Porn or not.
Then after they wipe off thier pants, they will make a dicision(sp?)Mind you,
this is only to protect you!(sic) Irish

From an objective point of view there are good points about this. As you mentioned it's an effort to catch the bad guys. They're just trying to catch the laws and regulations up with the technology. The idea behind the action is decent. The plan of execution has quite a few kinks (and I don't mean the fun ones). This might be the right time to try coming up with a better plan and submitting it to your government. I don't know how that would work over there, but for me I would write a letter to my congressman with another idea. You might try them using stronger parental controls to keep the underage thing in control. I'm not sure what you can do for the adults. The best parental controls I tried to get through was MSN. I couldn't do it. AOL was a sinch.

Well LS, our equal to a congressman is an MP (minister of parlament). IE7 has parental blocks in place, the thing with that though is to make sure your kids don't change the settings back is to make them a limited user via the user accounts in control panel.
Once your kids turn 18 you simply change it back.
I understand why they want to do it, and part of me agrees with it, however as I mentioned it won't distinguish between one from the other, unless of course they look at the library of urls in our internet browsers and deem what they think is "child porn, porn" or just "naked pics" for medicinal reasons or as "art".
The funny thing is child porn websites don't actually exist for the obvious reasons as it is against the law and anyone who has a website that contains child porn is arrested and sent to jail.
So what are they really policing? I just think the gov'ment wants to show how imcompetent they are by wasting tax payers money on something that is not really needed. They do it all the time here. We have real idiots working here and what's more is we put them there. So what does that say about us?

We will see if this goes ahead or not, i have my doubts, even ISP's are saying this is not practical and refuse to trial it. To have every person censored it would slow the net down. We are already quite a ways behind other in this department, we need to be speeding it up and dropping cost, not the other way around.
If the seriously think this will stop the determined sicko bastards, the are mistaken, if they cant get it through the internet, they WILL find others ways or get around the filter someone, that is a given thing.
And again it will be the decent porn people who will be penalised because of the sickos!!
There will be an uproar if they put this in place, of that i am sure!

America is the BEST!!!
I will put our idiots up against yours anytime and win every time.
How many bureaucrats does it to take to change a light bulb?
Two.
One to assure that they have taken charge and everything is under control with all their power and resources being brought into action while the other one screws the bulb into the faucet.

In the words of H. L. Mencken:
