Assignment #3
Here is the next assignment I have in philosophy....could make for interesting conversation
For this assignment you are asked to make hard choices. A catastrophic event has occured and you alone have access to a life support environment (self-contained biosphere) that will enable human life to continue. There are ten (10) people with you, however, due to the restrictions of your artifical environment you can only save a maximum of 6 people including yourself. The catastrophic event will only have affects for up to 5 months, but anything not in your artifical environment will die within days. After 5 months the earth's environment will be safe and the six people will be able to venture out again and re-start the human race (by the way, assume that all ten of the people are the same race and religion as you). Which 6 will you save?
1. You (your current age and occupation)
2. Bookkeeper, 31 years-old, male
3. Bookkeepers wife, 30 years-old, 3 months pregnant, no other children.
4. Second-year medical student, 26, single male
5. Famous historian/author, 49, divorced female, mother of 2
6. Hollywood star, 27, divorced female, no children
7. Biochemist, 39, married male, father of 4
8. Farmer (former mechanic), 57, widowed male, father of 3.
9. Olympic Athlete, 22, single female
10. Police Officer, 35, divorced male, father of 2
11. 7-year-old daughter of police officer.
So now make your choices and justify who you are choosing and not choosing. Did you choose yourself? Why or why not? Then examine your own rational for your choices. What is it based on? What is your goal? Can you live with the ramifications of your choices? Who is the most valuable member of the group?
What do you think?????
