Teens May Not Realize Legal, Exposure Risks


NEW YORK -- Four percent of American youths have been asked for sexually explicit photos of themselves over the Internet.

A study published in the Journal of Adolescent Health surveyed 1,500 Internet users between the ages of 10 and 17. Sixty-five of them reported receiving a request, but only one actually complied.

Researchers said the number is troubling. With millions of young people online around the country, they said the numbers project to potentially thousands.

One of the researchers said young people need to know the criminal implications of the requests. Kimberly Mitchell, a University of New Hampshire professor, noted that it's not just the people making the requests, but the youths themselves who could be violating child-pornography laws if they comply.

She said that could even apply if it is another teen asking for the pic.

Mitchell said young people also need to keep in mind how quickly photos can circulate.
