				Do YOU............????

........ Turn your PC/laptop/whatever OFF when you're done?
I ask only because I usually don't; this evening, I came back to it to come and perv a (wee!!!) bit, and it wouldn't do ANYTHING!! I had to turn all the power off for 15-20 minutes before it'd do something, and it took 4 or 5 goes to get it working again!!

Just made me wonder what you all do!!

	| Your computer needs a reboot ever so often to clear the memory. Even after you leave a program, there is still some residual memory used. After a length of time, your memory will "get clogged up." Windows NT is most effective at clearing memory, but the earlier versions of Windows can be affected by use without a reboot. Even if you leave it on, do a reboot know and then.

	| I clear everything (history, files, cookies) and shut down if I know I won't be on for a while.....otherwise it'll hibernate and during that time I'm booted offline but my puter will say I am still connected.....and I hate when that happens cause I'll have to reboot anyway and it takes longer to shut down and then reboot. I have dial-up...and it's quirky!
Twice a month I defrag.....and spy and virus check (if I haven't recieved a notification to do so before).....

I just like to be tidy!

	| we have cable modem, but we have three peeps using one computer for a good deal fo each day...We usually power down around three or four in the morning til someone gets up in the morning and turns it back on....But then I know some folks who rarely turn theirs off. |

	| Both PCs here are on 24/7... they only get turned off when I leave on a trip for more than 3 days. Even then I am considering leaving the server running as I can access my files remotely that way.
The monitor on the server is always off (other than for service or when being used as a TV, which is pretty rare).

I'm not sure what current reliability data says about these things, but when I used to work for DEC (6 years ago) some of the reports I read indicated that the most likely time for a hard disk failure was at turn on (stress on the bearing). Once they were running leaving them on was the way to go.

	| I have heard that it is best to leave them running, as it is easier on them, but I preferr to shut ours down when not in use. I also use Norton clean sweep to clean up any residual files everytime I boot up.

 | Ahh, thanks Tess. We're getting a new computer later this week. I'll schedule it for a reboot, say every 7 days perhaps?

	| Usually leave it on until we're all going to bed, that way it only has to go through the start up once a day.

	| Leave it on 24/7 unless gone more than 3 or 4 days.
