NYC Travel advice
I have a lady friend who's making a jaunt to NYC her first time. She's so excited about going but at the same time she has the concerns about finding her way and of course safety. Do we have any among our members who might offer some tips that I can pass along to her? I know that's a vague request but I'm just trying to help a young girl with her first trip to the big city.

Well I was there once when I was around 13 which was too many years ago to have any valuable input....plus I have watched far too many Law and Order programs! LOL

actually, new york is very easy to get around in.
the avenues run north-south, and most are numbered. 1st avenue being the farthest east. fifth avenue is in the center of the city and divides east from west.
streets run east-west. the numbers of the streets go up as you go north. so the higher the street #, the farther 'uptown' you are. it's very gridlike and hard to get lost, although the intimidation factor makes up for that. tell her to avoid parks at night, but i doubt she'd stray into crime 'hoods. and to take the subway/cabs when she can. even though it's only a few blocks away, the walk can be pretty damn far.

If she appreciates architecture...the New York Public Library is incredible. We've been to NYC too many times to count but ventured into the library for the first time last winter. Actually, that trip was the first time since childhood when either of us went into the city to do tourist things, and we all had a great time.

I’ve never gotten to go as a tourist during a lot of visits to the city, but always found it not too different than most big cities, just a lot more of it. Until she knows her way around, NYC is NOT the place she may want to be driving her car. It’s rush hour all day long and you don’t have time to figure out where you’re going if you don’t already know. As for safety, just act the same as you would any place else and don’t do stupid things. Advantages and danger are the same ratio as most places. Just remember there’s a lot more of both in a lot smaller area.
I don’t know if she’s going for business or pleasure, long term or just a visit, but take LOTS of $$. Tell her to pay attention and have a ball.
