City MoonWalk to battle breast cancer is a stellar success

(SF)

Original Story Here

Spirits were high despite damp weather in the capital
Organisers of a late night charity marathon said they hope £2.5m has been raised for good causes.

About 10,000 men and women took part in the MoonWalk in Edinburgh overnight in aid of breast cancer research.

Many participants ignored the bad weather and stepped out wearing brightly-decorated bras.

Television presenter Lorraine Kelly, who lost her grandmother to the disease, and Pop Idol winner Michelle McManus were among those involved.

The event, which began at midnight, saw participants power-walking either a "half moon" or a "full moon" marathon around the city, starting and finishing in The Meadows.

Last year's inaugural event raised more than £1.7m and, with the event being 20% bigger this year, organisers expect to smash that figure.

Kate Bosomworth, spokeswoman for the event, stressed that all the money raised in Scotland would stay in Scotland.

She said the walk was "magical" as well as moving.

"It's been a really good event. The atmosphere's been absolutely brilliant. Everybody seems to have enjoyed themselves, despite the rain.

"The showers cleared just before everybody started the MoonWalk, which was nice.

"It was quite damp and cold for the walkers, but when we got to Portobello beach this morning it was just glorious. The daylight just lifted everybody."

The winner of the half marathon completed the course in two-and-a-half hours, while the first person to finish the full marathon did so in the "very quick" pace of five hours.
