Not as planned
Christmas gifts for Mr. Lil never work out as I plan. I went to buy him this BBQ grill he picked out, and was in luck there was one, the floor model left. Unfortunately my dumb ass did not figure in getting it home. So Mr. Lil had to go pick up the grill this morning, Merry Christmas to him. So now I am crazy trying to figure out how to salvage the day and was thinking I'd gethim some nice grill stuff to go with it and a good cover, although we use a grill so much it will very rarely be covered. Now here's the you part...
What would you suggest (be specific as to brand/kind if possible please) me to get to go with it? I know many of you are BBQ peeps, so what tools/toys do you love?

Lilith,
How about some knives to go with the grill? Guys like knives, and there are many on-line stores which will ship for a before-Christmas delivery.

That scene from Basic Instinct is coming to mind, for some reason...

I have a couple of gadgets I love and use both inside and out ... they are all either weber or char-broil brand
- stainless steel spatula shaped tongs - I can't use the hamburger flipper, the burgers always end up between the grates, but the spatula shaped one works perfectly.
- stainless steel kabob sticks - just spray them with some oil before use so the stuff comes off easier, and use a hot pad on the kabob ends
- vegetable basket - this makes vegetables so much easier to deal with
perhaps a collection of sauces or marinades would be nice - I don't have any favorites I can recommend.

we have this great multi-tasking spatula. (i am a big fan of multi-tasking cooking tools) don't know the brand name but the thing is jurassic-huge. it has a wicked-sharp serrated edge on one lone side, these dull, scooped knobby thingies on the other side that fit over the grill surface for scraping, and a bottle opener toward the bottom of the flat part. a nice long, insulated handle too.
a good basting brush with a nice long handle. i haven’t' tried the new silicone ones yet, but i do want to buy one. easier to clean than the natural hair ones and more heat resistant.
and order some BBQ sauce from corky's (corkysbbq.com). best BBQ sauce on earth.
and maybe an assortment of apple, hickory and maple wood chips for smoking
imo, long bamboo skewers are best for grills, the food doesn’t spin around on ‘em when you turn ‘em over.

A fire extinguisher?
That's the only essential grill accessory in my house!

I have two kinds of BBQ's, 1) a charcoal burning standard BBQ because I like the taste and it keeps the meat moist, and 2) a Smoker BBQ. I only use the smoker when I'm entertaining because of the length of time it takes to cook anything. But it does do great roasts and whole fish.
So I'm going to suggest you get a smoking attachment for your gas BBQ. There are a few different kinds out there. Most are Clay. You place right on top of the burner. Home Depot sells the wood chip. It will add a depth of flavor to anything that you BBQ.
Seeing as it is -20 right now, I will not be BBQing until May! So sad.

Lil,
What kind of BBQ? One of the Weber gas models?
A net to keep the cardinals out?

I second jseal's idea. A nice set of Henckels would make any red-blooded American man proud. You can get 'em anywhere. I bought mine at Williams-Sonoma.
