Tornadoes!
As of 2000 this evening, the tornado watch for my county has been lifted. Unprecedented numbers of confirmed tornadoes in the counties of Northern Virginia, West Virginia and Maryland. Fortunately, most of them have been minimal tornadoes, 80-100 mph winds, touching down for a few minutes at a time, then dissipating, 50-75 yards wide at ground level, that sort of thing. Nearest one to me touched down one town over. (Poolesville, MD). No reports of injuries from these storms reported (so far).
Authorities are still worried about flash flooding and storm damage from strong winds gusts. Current minimum of 13,000 people without power in the area. Heavy rains predicted for over night.
Not completely out of this yet, but things have calmed down by comparasion.

I know tornadoes are terrible things, yet they have a beauty all their own. Nothing like seeing a tornado to realize just how small we really are and just how frail.

As it picks you & your house up & throws you both into the next county...somehow, I'm missing that sense of rapture...

Oh, there's nothing quite like flying through the air, knowing that when you hit, you head's going to split like an over-ripe tomato.

But if you look out the window, you may see Steph on her bicycle and YOUR little dog.

Vullkan is right, tornados are very cool. It's amazing, I've seen the results of when they lift the roof off a building, turn it 180 degrees and put it back down. Or level one house and not disturb the one next to it.
Scary, yes, but very interesting.

It would seem that at least a couple folks have taken my post wrong. In no way did I say tornadoes are cool--wonderful--niffty or etc...For my part, I view tornadoes in the same light as tigers--sharks--bears and the like. And that like tornadoes they have a beauty and splender.

Please note the title under my nick...I didn't misunderstand your post at all, just taking advantage of every opportunity to be a smartass...as was gekkogekko...
I have witnessed a tornado up close & personal & the awesome things it can do...well, from about a mile away, trust me, that's closer than I ever wanna be to one ever again...wasn't the traditional funnel one usually sees, but a triple vortex passing over my fair city some years back...& actually, yes it was oddly a cool sight to see...streaky clouds passing each other in opposite directions, a memory I'll always carry along with me...
