The Blair Witch Project
OK, this may be a lame thread but what the heck, might as well through it out there.
It's a two parter.
1/. When Blair Witch first opened or was about to open how many people thought it was real? I'll say that here in Australia it was release about 2 months or so after the States so we pretty much knew that it wasn't.
2/. Are there any local myths or legends in your neck of the woods?

1) saw it on video was aware that they do not playreal murders in theaters.
2) We have a psych hospital that is abandoned that has super strong psychic energy. I won't even drive down the road it is on.
At camp the kids tell the story of Sopchoppy Sam the man with one hand...

When I was a Scout, there was a rumour here in Surrey, England, that there was a Surrey Puma on the loose that could strike any walking person day or night (scary, seeing as Scouts did night hikes). Yet, nearly 8 years since I've heard this, a Puma has never struck in Surrey.

Honey I live in Louisiana, "Home of all VooDoo and Freaky Stuff".
Kidding aside....alot of folks tend to call my town the center of what's known as The Red Web....an area of malignant psychic energy and creepy stuff tends to happen alot in the more remote areas.

Oh yes most notable is the Swamp of no Return effect. Once you move to the area and expend any psychic energy you are bound to that area.
Most likely your soul will be too and that means no pleasant aftre life for you as your disembodied spirit wanders around in the places you once were.
Oh yes and the nasty chemical plants will not be very good either tainting the soul like it taints the land. Can you get cancer of the soul? You better hope not!
Anyways it is all my fanciful delusions addind a twisted explination of why there are so many damn ghosts and demons running aorund especially in rural areas where churches almost outnumber people.
Other strange effects to watch out for:
1) Sometimes you will randomly teleport across the area.
2) Blind old ladies you meet in the boonies who you never met, but expected you to come by.
3) Really, really fat people with poor hygene.
4) A swamp yeti
5) A guy who looks like a swamp yeti, but is really my dad.
6) A girl between the ages of 18 and 25 who is single with no kids, attractive and willing to give my sorry ass a blowjob (OK I made that one up.)
7) My sorry ass about once a month on weekends (OK I amde this one up too. I don't have gas money to come visit Sucubus Kitty anymore and I amy just have to move there soon since my rent is running out. Also, I don't have a sorry ass, but I am told by everyone that I have a very smart one.)

Here in my neck of the woods (Hahaha another bad pun my location is listed as the Big Thicket and well you get the idea.), there are a few legends and ghost tales that are interesting.
The entire Big Thicket region was considered haunted by the local indegenous peoples and as such it was largely uninhabited until the white man forced the Alabama tribe was forced off their lands. Still they only settled on the edges of the dense impenetrable jungle and never went into the heart of the thicket.
There are tales of guardians resembling bears or eagles feircely attacking anyone who dares to venture into lands considered forbidden.
There is a tale of a headless watchman on an old train track who was decapatated in an accident.
The boggy creek man is either a hermit or a swamp yeti who got lost.
Actual hermits live in their shacks and some of my ex-fiancee's relatives actually lived in the woods living off of the land jsut like their ancestors did.
The wildlife is diverse and unique and not particularly dangerous. Just stay away form wild pigs and alligators. Houton is also exotic pet capital of the world so some times there may be tales of an escaped emu, python, monkey out there.
There are no bears and panthers and wolves are scarce. I am hoping one day to own a wildlife refuge and rectify that.
The terrian is trecherous and all looks the same. It can look like a primeval forest untouched by man, but in reality you are only 2 miles from a major city. As a result, people foolishly get lost in there.
Witches like open clearings, hippies smoke weed in the state park and Satanists are in the abandoned saw mills performing foul rites to an unspeakable horror.
Speaking of weed Cannibas sativa can be found if you are lucky, but as my scoutmaster once said "Son half the forest is edible and the other half is smokeable toke up!"
Boyscouts pose no danger, but they are really geeky and horny and smell bad too.
Oh and of course there are giant spiders, but this ain't Modor so worry more about the snakes, lizards and escaped gorilla.
Vampire bats, fire ants and killer bees are the least of your worries. Sentient tree roaches give me the creeps.

I remember that X-Files episode about the Jersey Devil. And wasn't there a movie in the same vein as Blair Witch about it?
Anyway - there are rumours of panthers lurking in the eastern region of Victoria. Supposed to have escaped/been let loose by US marines during a war years ago as they kept it as a mascot.

That would certainly make any movie more enjoyable.

I had the misfortune of PAYING to see the Blair Witch project in the movie theater. I knew it was not real, but I fell for the hype that it was really original and really scary... and was seriously disappointed.
As far as myths and legends in my neck of the woods... Bigfoot lives in my 'backyard'.

I liked Blair Witch - the idea was simple yet pulled off really well. The best example of clever marketing of an idea I've seen.
But I'm biased towards it because I like it

*runs n hides under my magic covers*(Ya'all remember your magic covers don't cha?? lol All safe from monsters and things that go bump in the night under there)
I can't even look at the video in the store with out getting chills. I thought for sure Hubby would be a smart ass and it would end up under my Christmas tree this year. Thankfully it didn't and an exorcism was not not needed..lol
As for local ledgends..we've got TONS. One in particular involves a church. Anyone ever hear of The Blue Eyed Six? They were a gang that killed some people. And were hung for their crimes. And their bodies are said to be burried at this church. And of course there are all kinds of stories about glowing blue eyes if you look through the window. I personally have never seen or felt anything, and I'm usually pretty in tune to these kinds of things.
I do however live in a haunted house. Which is pretty fun.

White Noise,
I hated Blair Witch, but I do agree it was the best idea of marketing.
Amateur Porn has better camera work and costs more to produce, but Blair Witch managed to net more profits and they had the balls to make a sequel.
