--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
NEW YORK (CNN) -- A major power outage simultaneously struck dozens of cities in the United States and Canada late Thursday afternoon.
Cities affected include New York; Boston, Massachusetts; Cleveland, Ohio; Detroit, Michigan; Toronto, Ontario; and Ottawa, Ontario. The power outage occurred shortly after 4 p.m.
State officials said the Niagara-Mohawk power grid was overloaded. The grid provides power for New York and stretches into Canada. The officials said the outage is a natural occurrence and not related to terrorism.
Much of Midtown Manhattan and Wall Street were shut down. All area airports and the Long Island Railroad were also affected. The airports were operating on back-up power and operations were reported to be normal, officials said.
The New York City Police Department said they were trying to determine what happened.
Thousands of people could be seen leaving buildings and walking into the streets. New York subways were reported stopped and people were trapped in the cars.

I think PF may also be affected by the outage.

well... it did suck out here in Rochester for a little bit, but at least in my small local area power is now back on. The news (listening to the AM radio out of NYC) says that they are also starting to see power come back.
So far the blame is something in New York City overloaded the grid down there and it dominoed outward. Basically the other grids could not deliver the needed power and went into shutdown to prevent some burn outs (at least that is what they are saying on the radio). So it is just taking time to get things isolated and the grids back on line.

PS. when I walked home from work (not too far), as the car is stuck at the shop , I got in and everything was off except the PCs and the cable modem. They are on UPS.... I was able to send off an e-mail to my parents before I shut them down

I think in lay terms the power grid had an orgasm and had to get a little sleep then.

LMAO @ dicksbro!!!!!
50 million people without power!!!
ABC is reporting that there are a lot of people "stuck" in the subway systems!!! About 350,000 people on the trains!!!
There is a special note that the power loss isn't related to that damn blaster worm...
I have attached a map of the locations that have been effected.....

My S/O works in the power industry here; watching CNN tonight, he said that NYC's mayor was right on target as far as what happened with the overload and the requirements needed to go back online. He also made the comment that those in the plants affected were quite fortunate; the main plant, a 1200 megawatt nuclear facility, could have easily had problems had it "tripped." Thank goodness for back-up plans and safety checks.

Gentlefolk,
Keep in mind that here is a qualitative difference between a data network and a power network.
Pixies is a data network, where "too much load" causes a delay in service (slow response). A power grid is power or load network, where "too much load" causes the grid/network to STOP or go offline, in order to protect the physical plant.
The two types of networks are dissimilar.

Yippie! I was in traffic when the power went out and the streets became a free for all! The streets of Watertown turned into bumper cars. Cars racing through intersections, cars turning onto main streets without a care that they might get hit. I needed a stiff shot after that!
