Overlord Remembered-

Does any one else have friends or relatives that were part of Operation Overlord, 59 years ago? I’m sure some of our British members may have a firsthand link to this. On behalf of two uncles, (one returned) thank you.

[Otherwise I may be typing this in German]

This term was not familiar to me before reading your question PF .... but quick search on Google and ... voila' ....

I have a dear old friend who was in the first group to land on Normandy on D-Day ... I know that he's been interviewed several times in the last 15 years about that because of how few survived the day from that group originally, and then the many years that have passed since then .... he was a young man when it happened. I also feel deeply grateful for the sacrifice of those who were there ... those who made it through and especially to those MANY who did not return.

(ASS..u..ME! sorry)

Yes. D-Day invasion of Europe, 6 June 1944
Largest flotilla mankind ever launched. England’s citizens loaded their private fishing and pleasure boats with men and equipment and fell in right behind the gunboats to move everything they could across the channel.

Canadian TV has been showcasing D-Day with the opening of the Juno Centre to pay respects to our soldiers.

I remember my next door neighbour talking about it one time, but sadly he died recently, so I cannot ask him more. My uncle was in the naval forces at that time but sadly he has passed on too. I am still thinking if I know anyone else though, there must be someone I know still alive around these parts that was involved!!!
Oh! and I have heard of it, but then again, I am one of the oldies here!!!!

I'll drink to that MilkToast, I don't think we could hack it today, we have all been pampered far too much, and I don't think we could live with the rationing and generally giving up our luxuries willingly

I had a couple of uncles that were part of the invasion and my father-in-law went in as soon after as bases were available. He was part of a fighter aircraft maintenance unit.

My dad, on the other hand was stationed in the Pacific.

My father served in the Army Air Corps (later the Air Force) from 1929-59, he was stationed in the Pacific during the war...in Quartermaster (supply), I believe...spent time in Peru, New Guinea, & points west...he brought back many samples of currenncy from many places around the Pacific Rim, & just yesterday I stumbled onto his certificate showing that he crossed the 180th meridian...thereby entering the "Domain of the Golden Dragon - and duly initiated into the Mysteries of the Far East"...pretty heady stuff, if ya ask me...
