Volunteers...why do you do it?
My wife is a very active volunteer. She participates in the various children's ministry teams at our Church (we have younger - pre Highschool kids) and she also is the chairwoman/coordinator of a program, also at our Church, that deals with homeless people.
I really admire her passion, and frankly I lack the same passion - at least for these things. I like to think these just aren't my things to do. When I help her, I do so gladly because she is my wife, but outside of that for the programs themselves I don't have a lot of interest.
So that got me to thinking. What about you. Do you volunteer? Where? And more importantly why? What is it that drives your passion?

I volunteer as an advocate for children in the dependency court system. I do it to give them a voice.

I volunteer with the Boy Scouts because the program promotes and develops teamwork, community involvement, and self-discipline in the boys. Our guys are all inner city boys, and really enjoy getting away from the asphalt and concrete and into the woods.

I do quite a bit of volunteer work ... at church; as part of a fraternal organization devoted to charitable works; working at a soup kitchen in Peoria sometimes; and, to collecting all kinds of things for Appalachia and countries in need around the world. (We've sent things to Guatamala; Columbia; Kenya and Togo in Africa; and, to Russia.) I was blessed to make it to retirement and so I'm using part of my time to help others. No fancy reason, just seems like the right thing to do.

Yeah, I do a lot of volunteer work for a number of different organizations. Why do I do this?
Because I am a self-described nucking futcase.
