Adobe reader help anyone?

Good morning everyone,

As is my "normal" custom,- like we can really USE that term in regards to me?-
I periodically delete files on my computer that I don't believe I have a use for.

Well this time I've done it, and deleted a file from my Adobe Acrobat Reader, and now it isn'tworking properly.

I have attempted un-install, and also re-install the reader program, but I can do neither because a file is missing.

Any of you computer savy Pixies got a suggestion, besides telling me to STOP deleting files, that I'm not sure I need or not?

I'm missing a file called "Ac705RdP_efgj.msp"

Can't you just install a new version?

unfortunatly no! the file that is missing is needed to both INSTALL as well as un-install.

Attempting to overwrite the install finds that the file is missing, and the install is aborted

That is strange... you should be able to at least run a repair.

One thing you can do is do a system restore to the point of you just deleting stuff you shouldn't have deleted.... try that and then see what happens.

You could download a new installation kit from Adobe. Or, if you know where this file goes, I could send you it.

hmm very odd....How was your Adobe Acrobat Reader installed? .msp files are a kind of installer package file, I think. You'd normally use them if you were installing the application from a command line. I guess it could be a patch file, if you've updated from an earlier verison of AAR, in which case your system is looking for the install source when it's trying to make any changes to the existing install. If this is the case you might not be able to do the following!
Now assuming you're running Windows you should be able to go into control panel and then add/remove programs and select Adobe Acrobat Reader. You're then given the option to rerun the install routine and run a repair on the install. This should replace any mmissing files. You should also find the original setup files and data cab files in the following location:-
C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat 7.0\Setup Files\RdrBig708\ENU
or something similar!
You can rerun the setup from there also by running the nicely named setup.exe file!

You could also try renaming the folder that AAR is installed into then download and install the latest version from the adobe website. If that works then you should be able to delete the renamed folder.
Rename this folder
C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat 7.0\
to something like
C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat_old

See how you get on with that.

thanks everyone. I got it fixed with a complete install of Reader 7.0.8.

I had to go into my msconfig and delete any reader files that I found in there, it was a pain, and I don't recommend doing it. But I'm good to go.

Thanks for all your help.
