Not that kind...the feline kind

The cat that I have is about six years old. She grew up with a cat about five years her senior until Tolkien died about a year and a half ago. For a while I've considered getting another cat/s.

The best thing to do would be to get two kittens from the same litter. Then they grow up together. the catch is that I don't think that I really want to have three cats in the house.

The second idea is to get another grown cat. Hoping that the two of them get along is a long shot. Sometimes it works and other times its nothing but hissing and fights. If I did get an older cat I would have to make sure that I could have 'give-backs' in case things didn't work out.

My cat, Scourge, isn't spayed.

Does anyone have experience with integrating older cats into the same house? Would I be better getting another female or neutered male?

Tom

We have four cats. They're not all that far apart in ages but we did not bring any of them in at the same time. They all get along except for our 3rd cat will sometimes growl and hiss at the 4th cat we brought home.

I'm not sure about male or female.

We were adopted by a stray female. She was a tiny thing and very affectionate.

Apparently she was very affectionate with the boy cats too because she had two litters. The first litter was two males and a female. The second litter was three males and two females...and we found homes for that batch. So, we went from no pets to four rather quickly. Two years later, Mrs. WI came home with a little female kitten and the other cats absolutely hate her! They're finally to the point where they'll tolerate her, but she's definately not going to be snuggled up to anytime soon.

But at least they've pretty much given up hissing at her. Then again, it's been a whole year!

I had two for a short period. A neutered male about a year old, and a 6 week old girl. I had to get rid of the baby girl just as they really started to get along. I socialized them through a closed door. The kitten had only one room where she was kept. I would allow them to talk through the door and have face time when I was home only. I increased their face time as they could be trusted without the baby ending up covered in spit from being attacked.

It took about 6 weeks before they would curl up and nap together in a chair.

Unfortunately, she did a number on my allergies and I had to give her up. My male is about 3 now and is aggressive and possessive and unfriendly. Not sure I'd try to add another with him anytime soon.
