So much for Lilith your phone sex operator
Day 14 and I've already lost my voice. Coughing just strips my vocal chords. Any suggestions or remedies I can try? After tomorrow I have a 3 day weekend to recuperate.

You need something warm, salty, and slippery in your throat.
Gargle with warm salt water.

NOT lemons.
The acids in lemons only numb your vocal chords, making it hurt less, but when the numbing wears off you have to deal with the damage you did while you couldn't feel anything.
Vocal rest is probably the only thing that will really cure you. Hot tea may relax the muscles in your throat and make you feel better, but only vocal rest will get you back to where you want to be.
In the future, there are certain things you can do to project your voice. Do not try to talk over your classes, wait for them to be quiet for you (also a good classroom management technique). When you ahve to project your voice, do it from your stomach not not your chest or throat. And drink water, lots of it, all day. With a citrus fruit in it - but not lemons.
hope this helps. It's good to have another teacher around. How is it going besides this?

garlic. a few cloves. something to do with mucus membranes around the vocal chords. when you lose your voice the chords are swollen and dry so, as with almost any malady~DRINK LOTS OF FLUIDS! garlic in veggie broth would be a way to do both maybe.
and no talking. i read somewhere that whispering is tougher on your pipes than talking at your normal volume.
you shouldn't talk anyway cause you'll have garlic breath.

Lilith,
Actors swear by a spoonful of honey before they go on stage if they're beginning to lose their voices during a play run. I've had experience of this once, and yes, it does seem to work.
Also, if your throat is overly dry, chocolate, milk, cheese and other dairy produce are known to increase mucus production in the body....might help to lubricate the throat and vocal chords....
Failing that, I think Aqua's suggestion is your best bet....I'm sure the men of Pixies would club together to help out.

You've had phone sex with Darth Vader????
(PS ... I was going to say you could amputate the head ... but then I realized it'd mean or lots of or maybe some . Wasn't worth it, so I take back that idea :bang: . )

No, no, no...
The mucus production produced by diary products creates the substance known as phlegm, which you will then have to cough back up, making your throat ever dryer. Milk is probaby the worst thing for you.
Sorry to be such a know-it-all but i had to take several singing classes in college, so I known some stuff about vocal health.
And yes, whispering is worse on your chords because it causes more air to go past them than actual speaking does, drying them out more.
FLUIDS, FLUIDS, FLUIDS....

Apologies, I didn't read Lilith's post properly and didn't realise that her sore throat was caused by excessive coughing.....
I thought it was just dry (caused by air conditioning or talking to her to class so much) in which case my suggestion of eating mucus increasing foods, is actually a good one.
Sorry Lil, LAW is right, but I'm sure you realised that anyway.
