detecting $U@&!#% proxy settings

what does this mean???

why does my computer get it into it's head about every three weeks that, for about a week, it just has to detect the proxy settings randomly yet with a suprising frequency? :bang:

is there any way to make this stop?

What are you doing when it detects the proxies? And do you get a dialog box or what? Just curious...

I don't know what type of internet connection you have, but it could be that your ISP uses dynamic IP's (the address of your proxy changes every time you connect to the internet) instead of a static IP. And you may just be running into when the modem is resetting itself or the base server of your ISP is resetting itself. Dynamic IPs are used to minimize hacking. But given what happens to you... I doubt this is the case. I would recommend calling your ISP.

MilkToast, FussyPucker or one of the other Pixies that knows what they are doing will be a lot more help, I’m sure, but “proxy” anything would scare the hell out of me. I don’t want ANYTHING or ANYBODY changing anything I haven’t asked to be changed.

After I determined a date BEFORE this stated to happen, I’d look for a restore point that I MIGHT have to go back to. Then I’d get the dogs and my club.

I’d run a spywear scan, then my antivirus, then do a Disk Cleanup from System Tools under the Accessories menu. I’d see if MS Help had anything information for “proxy” hat may help me locate where the bad guy may be hiding. If I found anything that looked suspicious, particularly in my registry, I’d make note and ask one of our smart guys if it’s right or what I could safely do about it.

Now do what I told you and go ask one of the people that know something.

Sorry dear. Just the word “proxy” means somebody is doing something “for” me. Like “Hi I’m from the IRS and here to help you!”

Remember, I’m old like the Russian Mir space station.

It sounds like you have a problem with the proxy settings on your computer, but as long as you still connect with websites ok, I don't think that it's a big problem. Like I said, it's probably just the dynamic IP of Comcast changing. This really isn't a spyware/virus/evil ninjas in robes thing. Nothing that I would worry about. But if it gets worse and you can't connect to pages, or if it bothers you more, I would give Comcast a call.

Having a proxy server is not a demon *LOL*..

We used to connect to a proxy server....and would get some occassional grief....we'd just ring our ISP and ask for assistance to fix the problem

Easy solved

Go into IE, click Tools -> Internet Options -> Connections -> LAN Settings. What options have you got set?

The "Automatically detect proxy settings" option in IE results in your browser querying a server at your ISP for proxy settings, these are mainly used in larger ISPs who may run lots of different proxy servers with customers (ideally) directed to one that they are closer to and therefore have a faster connection to. It may be that in some cases the way your ISP picks your proxy server is too slow, it's hard to say. You may want to try bypassing the proxy if you can; web proxy servers are mainly useful for people on slow (ie: dialup, or broadband shared by lots of users) connections or situations where downloads from the proxy are free but other web traffic is billed. In many cases these days they're more trouble than they're worth. You might want to try unticking all the tick boxes in the LAN settings dialog. It's possible that your ISP requires you to go through a proxy but I doubt it.

Hope that helped!

It sounds like the people that know, feel this is not a problem. That’s great to hear. I got the feel that this was something that just began happen, indicating a recent change of some sort has taken place. If this is exclusively involving your internet connection and you don’t recall having made changes on your end, your IP had to.

I guess conformation and the remedy will be easy to get from them.

Can you tell I’ve had my OS start do little tricks that I worked around…………. until it took over my puter.

Now I’d like to discuss something I AM an expert on, Wyndhy. Step over here so we can work on the "settings" of your wet panties.

i wasn't worried about the spies, can't keep them totally out anyway

it is just soooo annoying. the page will suddenly take forever to load....longer than dial-up in the end. drives me bug shit and has me convinced this computer has a soul and it's decided to hate me with a passion.

thank you all for your help!

i do have the automatic ticked in those lan settings but it frightened me away by saying i need to worry about manual settings if i unclicked it. no wonder this computer holds me in contept...i am a chicken shit when it comes to showing it whose boss

i'm calling comcast

Unticking the 'Automatically detect settings' should fix it. I always do that when setting up a computer.

As the lovely people here say just go ahead and uncheck the proxy setting there's most likely no need for it to be set. However, if it is needed all you have to do is put the check back!

Basically a proxy server is used as a link between yourself and the internet. If you're using a proxy server then any requests you make to a web page are sent to the proxy and it's the proxy that requests the information from the web page. Why? Well......You can set up proxy servers with certain rules, these could be used to block access to unsuitable sites for example porn or gambling sites could be added to a banned list and then anyone using that proxy server would not be able to view any sites that fit this description. For example I work for the government and our internet access HAS to go through a proxy to filter out all kinds of stuff, no visiting pixies from work

Aslo proxy servers usually cache website information, this means it keeps a store of frequently accessed pages.......so say loads of people visit http://news.bbc.co.uk everyday the proxy keeps a copy of bbc.co.uk's regularly accessed webpages and when you try to visit the site instead of going all the way out onto the internet you just pick up this locally stored copy, that way you get the information much quicker, as Belial said it's great for people on dial-up. of course you run the risk of picking up old data, but it's usually refreshed on a regular basis.

There's loads of other stuff you can set and do with a proxy but hopefully that should give you a rough idea of what it's all about.
