Either "Bridge over troubled water" or "Fuck off you bitch from hell".
Either/or's OK.

Both have more tenderness and pathos than a dam-full of "Sound of Music".

Air Supply 'All out of love' for completely indulgent self pity wallowing.

Oh I know it's overplayed but I love the James Blunt one too. It was written about his ex whom he did see on the London Underground with another man (as the song goes) and I bet she's gutted she split up with him now!

When I last had a breakup, every song I heard seemed to speak to me...nowadays, being older & more cynical, I'd prob pick "Ding Dong, the Witch is Dead" (in keeping with OF's line of thought)...
at a workplace a few years back, there was one young country girl deeply in love with her Bubba, with 3 of us older guys...one morning she came to work early, red-eyed coz Bubba broke up with her the night before...rest of us tried to give some space & not tease her like we usually did, but the oldies station kept playing all those sad old breakup songs, & we all nearly busted our guts trying to keep from laughing out loud...she finally went home early, thank god...

I agree with Loulabelle on that Air Supply song. What a great break-up song!
After you're all cried out, and it's time to start healing, then a good follow-up is "Waffle House hashbrowns, I love you".
"You know I long for you...you melt in my mouth. I'm crazy about you, pretty golden hashbrowns."

My nomination:
Written by Cat Stevens, performed also by Rod Steward & Sheryl Crow (among others, I am sure).
Heart-wrenching but optimistic at the same time:
The First Cut Is The Deepest
I would have given you all of my heart
but there's someone who's torn it apart
and she's taking almost all that I've got
but if you want, I'll try to love again
baby I'll try to love again but I know
The first cut is the deepest, baby I know
The first cut is the deepest
'cause when it comes to being lucky she's cursed
when it comes to lovin' me she's worst
but when it comes to being loved she's first
that's how I know
The first cut is the deepest, baby I know
The first cut is the deepest
I still want you by my side
just to help me dry the tears that I've cried
cause I'm sure gonna give you a try
and if you want, I'll try to love again
but baby, I'll try to love again, but I know
The first cut is the deepest, baby I know
The first cut is the deepest
'Cause when it comes to being lucky she's cursed
when it comes to lovin' me she's worst
but when it comes to being loved she's first
that's how I know
The first cut is the deepest, baby I know
The first cut is the deepest

I don't know that it's much of a break-up song but it is a great one for a guy who has just caught his wife/girlfriend cheating on him and is at that stage where he doesn't want to get over it but just wants to sort of soak in the pain a bit...
