Lightbulb school

I know we have many intelligent people here at pixies and that’s why I’m asking you all for some help. I took my placement test at school today to see what level it would be best for me to start my classes at. Well I missed getting into the chemistry class I desperately need for my major by one point. The person giving the test said people tend to struggle if they do make the cut point. This class is only offered in the fall since we are a local campus of Ohio University. This means I would have to wait another year to take it if I don’t this time.
What do you guys feel it would be best for me to do……take the class and get a free tutor if need be, or start at the level that they gave me and wait another year?
I know this is kind of an important decision but just put yourself in my shoes and tell me what you would do. I know it’s all up to me in the end but I would still like to hear from you guys. Thanks if you still are here reading this. Even thought I know it’s not about sex.

There are alot of unknowns here. Is chemistry something that you've studied successfully before or is it something you've struggled with? If you waited the extra year, would you lose your momentum or would you take advantage of other things that would also better prepare you for next year? Are you driven? How taxing are the rest of your courses?

I think it would be wise to wait the extra year, while working hard to prepare yourself for what's to come.

I'm a science geek, so this answer might be a bit slanted, so take it for what it's worth. I would take the class, get the tutor (especially since they're free). Sounds like it's a freshman level Chemistry, so base it upon your experience in H.S. Chem. If you did ok in that you should do fine in college chem. If need be you can always drop.

It would be a sophmore level chemistry 151 class, i have had another class in highschool which i did decent at got a B and i have had another class in college, which i got an A i needed to take the placement because where i started college a year early ( taking classes in HS) i didn't get to take it upon entrance to the university. this would put me a yeah behind in my science classes and mean another year here before i could transfer to a school with a Vet Program. thank you both for your opinion.

I failed a course at uni and had similar advice but didn't get a tutor. Then again, I had a math tutor (my aunt) in high school and I still sucked. I have no idea what possessed me to take math in university.

I also sucked at chemistry. I studied and studied chemistry but my brain just doesn't work like that.

If you think you can work your tail off and pass, go for it.

If you would be taking classes between now and then that would better prepare you for the 151 Chem class then I say wait. If not then time won't help you be any more ready. Although I must say that as each year progressed my study skills and the ability to gain and comprehend new information also increased. Good luck!

I say take it now and get the tutor.

You can always 'drop n repeat' if you need to.

Good Luck!!

You must be kidding. I happen to know a VERY sexy chem major is here ............... and very close to one of the nations, TRUE, BEST Vet schools. Probably the one you'll be going to if you are lucky.

What I know of you personally hun.....GO FOR IT!! I agree with the above favoring statements and even most of the reserved ones are not negative, only neutral. That gives you a majority of positive ones and I happen to believe you have what it takes to not only take it, but do well with it.

Chemistry, and science in general are not my strong points, so I commend you for starters!

I say go for it, you know that it may be very challenging for you, and you can mentally prepare for that in advance. Maybe it would be wise to take a lighter load so you have more time to focus on this one course (if that's possible). Take advantage of the free tutoring if you need it.

What I found was best in my college experiences was to find a buddy in the class (usually the one that was smart and I could understand). These people were often better than tutors simply because they could put things to me in a language I understood rather than technical speak.

OK...my take on it (and I was a Chem Engineering major, PF...not Chemistry ):

* Take the class if you can lighten your load in other areas. Do NOT take the class if you also have four other challenging classes for the semester.
* Get the tutor early and use the first couple of "slow" weeks to work ahead -- the early start will help you when the going gets tough
* Tell the teacher that you're taking the class and get his/her support -- often they will go the extra mile for the truly interested student
* Take a "fun" class to balance out all that Chemistry -- between the class and the lab Chem can be very tedious. It was NOT my favorite subject, but one of those "rites of passage" for both my program and yours.

If you need any morale boosters or anything, I am happy to provide. It's been a few years, but I believe I can dust off the Chemistry part of my brain.

Oh ~~ and if you want to come up and visit the OSU vet school, you're welcome to crash at my place...I live only about 1.5 miles away.

Thank you all so much for being so supportive , but I find that it will be best if I wait till the schedule for classes is printed, that way I can try to take it when it is best for me. If it doesn't work out I'll just take the lower lever class and work on the other areas I'll need for my major. Once again you all are the greatest.
