Xmas cards: Important?

OK, last year at work (2002) was my first at my job. I started on 2nd January '02 and had to wait a whole year until Christmas (like most people do, Jan-Dec). Being my first Christmas I didn't know how they did things, so I handed out cards to all members of staff after recieving a few. And we also had a big party on the 20th and I got mindlessly pissed and threw up.

This year was different. No party. As if I was bothered. Anyway. I didn't recieve as many cards as last year, and I kept thinking to myself, "I must write some back" but for the last week or so have been wondering "Shall I or shan't I?".

So I just need people's opinions please. Is sending a Christmas card to your work colleagues really that important? And was it rude of me not to send some back (I kinda feel guilty)?

Please vote in the poll. Written replies are welcome.

P.S - I didn't end up doing any in the end.

I only send or give Christmas cards to people that I care deeply about. I don't have a huge list, and I don't just add people at random. When I do send a card, it is heart-felt, and I typically write a short note inside. If I receive a card from someone that I didn't expect to receive one from, I appreciate it, but I don't feel compelled to return the favor - and I don't feel guilty if I don't send/give one in return.

So, to answer your question, IMO - you shouldn't feel guilty, and if you feel that you truly want to wish someone a Happy Holiday from your heart, do it.
