Did something for the first time today ...

Our new neighbors came over. They decided they couldn't make it, so they gave my wife and I tickets to attend an opera in Peoria. First time either of us have ever gone to an opera. Seats were delightful ... center of the theater 10 or so rows back. There was quite a good crowd.

The opera was called Lucia di Lammermoor and it was really very good! The director directed the Metropolitan Opera of New York for 23 years and has done the same in Europe, Asia and South America. Really a class act.

Never thought I'd enjoy opera or say good things about opera, but I'm glad now I was open to trying it. It was a love story that took place back in 1688-89 in England.

Peoria Civic Center theatre did it very nice. The singing was in Italian, but they were able to project on a screen set high above the stage the lyrics. Made it very easy to follow.

Any of you ever attend an opera? What was your reaction?

Funny. As I was reading you post I had playing Puccini Madame Butterfly. I love Opera. Even if you don't understand the words I love the rhythm and the feelings the music produces in me.

Every summer I go on a road trip. At some point on the trip I will roll down the window so I can smell the country side. I will then play some Opera. There I am surounded my beauty; sound, sight and smell.

I'm glad that you enjoyed yourself.

dicksbro,

I have enjoyed opera for many years. Permit me to recommend some of the works of Gilbert & Sullivan. While their efforts are not considered Grand Opera in the style of Mozart, Verdi, or Wagner, they are quite entertaining, and you may be surprised how many tunes you recognize. Try “HMS Pinafore”, “The Pirates of Penzance”, and “The Mikado”.

I would have to suggest Maria Callas performing anything from George Bizet's Carmen, if you are gonna start searching for some good music online. I have never attended an opera but have downloaded quite a few pieces I love.

I always say I will try just about anything at least once......and I've never been to an opera.....but I would go, just out of general curiousity!

I would have loved to have seen Madonna in Evita...or have a chance to see Jesus Christ Superstar or Tommy (rock operas).......but I don't consider that opera opera. Same thing with Pirates of Penzance, etc. that jseal had recommended. When I think of opera it's exactly what you described db.......sung in a language other than English.....a love story of sorts.....and the characters hitting notes that would shatter glass! Oh....and then there's the "fat lady" too...lol!

Just another of the many things I have yet to do to cross off my list of things I have never done! So glad you and Mrs. db got a chance to experience it. Sounds like it was lovely!
