Acutally the male penguins are from a species that is becoming extinct and females of that species aren't easy to find... The guys have been together for a long time... and scientist believe that they are turning to each other instinctively since there were no female penguins around. Some of the males will even sit on rocks (eggs) to try to make them hatch. Sweden has some females of the species...the reason that they are putting them together is in hopes that the do breed as their numbers are low.

In addition, they are also studying the social interactions of the males...they aren't specifically calling them homosexual - even though they are acting as such, but are curious as to how their environment effects their sexuality. To scientists it is an added bonus as far as breeding and learning more about the penguins social interactions. I thought that the article was poorly worded - after reading additional articles about it - scientists aren't trying to change the sexuality of a gay penguin.
