It is near impossible to fathom us (men) at times isn't it? I can't ever imagine being able to turn my back on a relationship if children are involved; how can anyone not want to be apart of that?

For you I am very sorry. It is my nature to always want to fix what is broken and I wish to fix this. At lease I would wish to tell this person what a fool he is or have a gentlemanly discussion in a dark alley--sadly such can never fix anything.
