I don't believe that refraining from buying gas for only one day will do anything. Most people that won't buy gas today filled up yesterday or will fill up tomorrow. The same amount of gas will be sold. As was mentioned earlier, the thing that will really send a message is to not use gas. Tomorrow (Thursday) is Bike to Work Day. If everyone rode their bike instead of using gas, well, I think that would be more productive than not buying gas for one day.
