For those who live in town, walk anywhere you can. Ride a bike. Use a wagon with kids. Use a stroller. It's not going to hurt anyone to get out and walk some. In the summer, I make it a point to take walks several times a week with my kids, even if it's just around the block (which is odd shaped, so it's about the size of 3 city blocks), or down the road to walgreens to get them each a small snack.
1 day won't make a difference in the overall gas prices, but leaving the keys at home, and using your legs will make a difference in your overall gas spending.
