I've had that emailed to me about a dozen times in the past 3 years. My guess is that who ever originated it has no clue one way or the other. It'll drift on to an urban legend. Of course, regardless of who actually does it, we still will only have about an 8th of the us citizens who do it.
A good way to make sure it happened, is to contact the stores that sell gas, and have them contact their general manager, and have all the stores not sell it for a day.
But we all know that won't happen, because they'd lose their profits, therefore making it impossible for even county wide participation, let alone state, or country.
Gas is a nessecary evil, and one day, hopefully soon, the gas mogels are going to shit themselves when scientists actually figure out how to make a gas-like clone that will power cars just as easily, for an 8th of the price.
If the US government were really all that concerned with the gas prices as they are today, they could be nice, and go ahead and revoke the taxes they slap on it, and instead, tax the gas companies what they would tax us. Though, regardless, we'd still feel the rise, likely even more so.
A better way to 'stick it to the man' is to get yourself a bike. A 1 time purchase, and a whole summer of free transportation. Car pool to work, school, etc. Not filling up for a single day isn't going to effect them. They don't care, they want the money. Think bigger, and the effect on the economy, and your own personal gas costs, will lower.
