I’d like to think not. That being said, one of the more unsatisfying aspects of contemporary democratic politics is the tendency of people to demonizing their opponents. That coarsening of the political discourse makes it, in my opinion, more difficult to address the large number of very real and very difficult issues with which humanity must come to grips.
Alas, America seems to be in the vanguard here. Then again, Americans are not known for their self-restraint.
