After answering their initial questions I've found that rather than asking "what do you want me to do?" that asking "precisely what do you want done?" lets them know you'll take charge to accomplish the goal instead of just performing a duty. If things progress to an over view, go straight to "where are your bottlenecks or problems?". "What are the timelines and what do WE have to work with?" is the next direction I head (or like to hear when I'm doing the interviews) to let them know you're ready to hit the ground running.
