"In my drinkin' days"...... a Bourbon- Old Fashion (double bitters, hold the garnish) was starting to be made when I came in the door of a few places. 
When I wasn't in a mixed drink establishment, bourbon, neat with soda on the side was standing order as long as I was standing.
