It's amazing how people see these things through their own cultural filters.
These people are not just down-and-out drifters out of the mainstream.
They are the remnants of a tribal cuture trying to live that culture in the face of the modern world.
The compromise just wasn't working, the kids want to be bros from da hood (because that has a sense of purpose and unity they lack here), the oldies just want somewhere quiet to drink, talk and smoke ganja, with a little rooting to keep the numbers up, and the generation in between just plain lost, without the skills and language to be employable and too into western ways to be happy in the communities.
The government was trapped between a paternalistic intervention aimed at a single racial group in deep trouble, (racial not racist) or a passive genocide by sitting back and watching these people go further down the path of personal and cultural destruction.
It is interesting that CunningLinguist advocates a personal freedom to molest young children (over a third of the kids including infants in these communities carry diseases which are almost exclusively sexually transmitted), the right for customary law including beating for minor infringements and spearing as "payback" for major infractions and killing for any reason they decide. The right to allow children to grow up so socially retarded that they are trapped into the same loop as their parents figures brightly there as well.
It sickens me that the situation was allowed to spiral as far as it did, and that a political election stunt brought it to a head.
Racist is when something is done to the detriment of the target group.
If this action is what it takes to save the next generation and give indigenous culture it's place in an Oz which has celebrated many of it's immigrated groups, then sadly, I'm a racist.
