While the term “GI” (government issue) doesn’t make a person the ‘property’ of the Army, it is a voluntary military which has the TOTAL authority over the individual soldier [even with the Pink Barrettes (“don’t ask/don’t tell”)]. They no longer issue US serial numbers (draftees).
That’s not a question of what they were doing. It’s a matter of the rules and laws the men agreed to.

If there is a stated regulation covering these actions, they can and should be held to the directive.
still, it has always seemed to me that the military just shoots itself in the foot when it spends big bucks training these people (esp. the ELITE troops), then tosses them out for infractions that in no way impede their ability to serve...of course, the term Military Intelligence has always been everybody's favorite oxymoron...
