actually, new york is very easy to get around in.
the avenues run north-south, and most are numbered. 1st avenue being the farthest east. fifth avenue is in the center of the city and divides east from west.
streets run east-west. the numbers of the streets go up as you go north. so the higher the street #, the farther 'uptown' you are. it's very gridlike and hard to get lost, although the intimidation factor makes up for that. tell her to avoid parks at night, but i doubt she'd stray into crime 'hoods. and to take the subway/cabs when she can. even though it's only a few blocks away, the walk can be pretty damn far.
